It's about inking your true thoughts and reflecting the real you.u00a0 Individuality is the mantra of the day and the youth have embraced it with their mind and body. A tattoo is now a strong symbol of an individual's personality.
Colour & appeal
"A tattoo is most likely to stay with you forever. I have a Celtic symbol on my arm, which signifies unity. I want to flaunt my beliefs. It makes me feel good to proudly show off what I stand up for," says Michael Charles, a designer.
"Earlier, boys used to opt for designs like dragons and eagles, and girls preferred butterflies and hearts," says tattoo artist and beautician Padmalatha PS, who owns Sasha Salon on Brigade Road. "Now people walk in with their designs and tell us exactly what they want."
Thomas (19), a student, sports the tattoos of a snake and a wolf, on his back and arm. "I designed them. I wanted to wear my art. The snake is usually known to be vengeful. Perhaps that's why it excited my curiosity," he says.

However, movie stars wield their influence on this trend as well. Manjunath, a designer, who promotes tattoo art, says, "Whenever a huge (film) star gets a tattoo done, it turns into a trend. A Bollywood star got a Sanskrit mantra etched into her skin and everyone in town wanted the same. I usually tell my customers to take their time on the design because most people, who blindly follow trends, invariably come back for cover up jobs!"
What's new
Favourite lines from a song, a symbol signifying your beliefs, a scene straight out from your imagination are some hot trends in tattoo art.
Internationally, trends like UV tattoo (tattoos that glow under UV light) and branding (burning or cutting skin and filling in with ink) are popular. Though they are yet to catch on in Bangalore, there are some tattoo parlours in places like Goa that do offer these services.
We guess the day's not far when there will tattoo courses in art colleges.
