Recurring incidents of gang wars and other related crimes in the Sahakarnagar police station area for the past few months have prompted the police top brass to transfer two officers for dereliction of duty.u00a0The decision was taken following alleged inability of Senior Police Inspector Mahadev Gawde and Police Inspector (Crime) F Y Qazi to maintain law and order during Friday's arson in Dhankawadi.
Shop owner Harish Jain and his friend Swapnil Eknath More (24) were killed when their shop was set ablaze by some local goons. While Jain died of suffocation on the spot, More succumbed to his injuries on Saturday in Bhosari Hospital. Another injured and brother of Swapnil, Sunny More is recuperating in a private hospital.
Gawde and Qazi were immediately transferred to traffic police division and special branch, respectively. Senior Police Inspector Kamalakar Takawle will now head the Sahakarnagar police station, while Police Inspector Rajendra Todkar has come as a replacement for Qazi.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Administration) Anant Shinde said the transfers were made owing to the officers' inability to control the situation. "Timely action could have prevented the already tense situation from escalating to such unhealthy extent," said Shinde.
On Friday around 10:30 pm, 10 to 15 motorcycle-borne men, armed with swords and sickles, arrived at the shop at Balajinagar, vandalised and set it ablaze eventually. According to the police, this could well be an act of gang rivalry.
According to the police, this could well be a fallout of gang rivalry. In October, 2011, a gang leader was murdered in the same area. Kingpin of the Ganraj group and hotel owner Baiju alias Pramod Baban Navghane (26) was murdered in a dispute with the Maratha Yoddha group led by Datta Mane, who was then booked by the cops following Sapna Dilip Jain's complaint.
In retaliation, Mane's cousin Dnyaneshwar Jadhav was murdered on January 11 in Ambegaon Budruk by the rival gang. This escalated tension in the area for the past few months. The police had identified nine suspects in the Mane murder case, which includes accused Sachin Gholap, who has also been named in the Friday's arson case.
