If mornings are making you misty-eyed these days then winters are here in Delhi. And authorities at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) are already pulling up their socks to deal with the perennial problem of fog.u00a0

Several proactive measures have been planned to minimise inconvenience to passengers and ensure continuity of flight operations during low visibility conditions. With the recent rehabilitation of runway 10/28, IGI is now equipped with two parallel runways with Category III-B Instrument Landing System (ILS).

The CAT III-B ILS at the airport allows compliant aircraft and trained pilots to land, even when the runway visibility is down to 50 metres, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said in a release.

It added that 130 parking bays have been provided with CAT III compatible lighting systems and trained traffic marshals with equipment are being deployed at taxiways and vehicular lane crossings for better efficiency and safety, they added. DIAL said for ensuring a smooth access to the airport during fog conditions, the new integrated Terminal 3 and 1D airport are adequately equipped for ensuring seamless and comfortable passenger travel.

Provisions of a passenger sky-walk and a pedestrian tunnel leading to the terminal building from the car park, Metro station and taxi stand along with a multi-level car park with capacity to accommodate 4300 cars have been made, it said. "Tow-away cranes are deployed for smooth traffic flow and additional traffic marshals will help in smooth flow of taxis during fog season," it added.

For providing latest update on flight status, DIAL has deployed specially trained customer service staff and set up additional help desks for assistance and information to passengers throughout the winter season.

The IGI Airport has also augmented its round-the-clock call centre, which will share the latest flight information, which can be accessed from the airport's website also.

Metro to IGIA

The airport journey on Delhi Metro is likely to happen very soon. The four Metro stations on the Line which would be opened in the first phase have got fire department clearance. The only hurdle remaining is now clearance from Commissioner of Railway Safety which could happen anytime now. Sources say the Line would either start on the weekend or early next week.
