Investigative Editor J Dey's murder in broad daylight on Saturday afternoon at Powai has raised some very ugly questions for many to answer.

There are many who question why the hospital, which the journalist was first rushed to refused to treat the almost-dying patient?

On Saturday, four assailants at Powai shot Dey. Two passers-by rushed the injured journalist to Powai Polyclinic and Hospital, a 25-bed facility at 2.55 pm.

However, officials at the hospital refused to treat him claiming they were ill-equipped to handle such an emergency and asked the locals to take the injured journalist to Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital.

Confirming the transfer, Suresh Rane Sub-Inspector who was investigating the case before it was moved to the Crime Branch said, "He was first taken to Powai Hospital as it was an emergency case, but they did not treat him there and asked to shift him to Hiranandani Hospital."

However, it has been learnt that while being transferred to Hiranandani Hospital, the journalist breathed his last and at 3.05 pm when they reached the medical facility, authorities reported that he was brought dead on arrival.

"When the patient reached our hospital, he was already dead," said Dr Sujit Chatterjee, CEO, Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital.

The Other Side
However, dispelling any rumours of negligence, Dr Sharmila Jadhav of Powai Polyclinic and Hospital said, "Between 2.30 and 3.00, a patient had come in a car to our hospital.

My doctors rushed outside and checked the patient in the car. They checked the pulse, which was feeble and the people accompanying the person just told us that he was found fallen on the road.

My resident doctors Dr Sharma and Dr Chaudhary even told them that our ICU that has two beds was full and surgeons were not present.

And in such a situation, they should rush the patient to Hiranandani Hospital, which is just two minutes away."

Powai Polyclinic and Hospital located at the IIT main gate is a 25-bed hospital, which also has a functional operation theatre.
