The impact of the crash was so severe that the taxi hit another parked cab ahead of it, leading to a 68-year-old woman seated in the vehicle to sustain serious injuries.

Hurt: Aparna Ajgaonkar, who sustained a fracture to her right leg, besides injuries to her forehead and torso

Aparna and her husband Rajaram Ajgaonkar were alighting from the parked taxi at Shivaji Nagar after returning from a relative’s birthday party when the mishap occurred.

The impact of the car ramming into the taxi parked behind caused Aparna, who was in the process of alighting, to be dragged along. Residents of Sri Ganesh Co-operative Housing Society, Shivaji Nagar immediately rushed Aparna to KEM hospital and got the driver arrested.

Rajaram said, “We had just returned home from a family function and were alighting from the taxi right outside our building. It was around 11.15 am on Wednesday when the accident happened. I alighted first and my wife was in the process of getting out of the cab when suddenly a speeding vehicle rammed into the taxi parked behind our cab. Due to the impact, both the taxis were pushed several metres ahead. As Aparna had one leg inside the taxi, she was also dragged along. Our neighbours rushed to our aid and also nabbed the driver. The driver was intoxicated and was immediately arrested by the cops.”

After several tests including an MRI scan, Aparna was admitted to KEM hospital.

The doctors said that the MRI scan was normal, but Aparna would have to undergo surgery for her leg. She also sustained injuries to her forehead and torso. D A Pawar, senior inspector, Worli police station said, “The driver who rammed his car into the parked cab was arrested. He was released on bail of Rs 5,000 on Thursday evening. We have taken Aparna’s statement and an investigation has been initiated.”u00a0
