For art's sake

Contemporary Indian abstract artistu00a0 Prabhakar Kolte doesn't believe in compromising where art goes. He talks to CS about the commerialisation of art and his stance on the matter:

No compromise
If an artist creates a piece just for the purpose of selling it, he is not a real artist at heart. For me compromising on my creation is like committing a crime. When I was a student I had read an article by a filmmaker who said, 'If I can't create what I want to, then I would prefer selling peanuts instead.' If I compromise, I am not an artist. That's always been my matra. Earlier too, since I didn't want to commercialise my work, I took up teaching and became a textile designer to make ends meet. It was better than bending backwards.u00a0

No change please
Commercialisation of art is an abuse to the art fraternity. Now a days a person who talks about freedom of speech, curbs that freedom himself. It's like a filmmaker cutting out a few scenes from his movie to appease the censor board. If you can't exhibit your work openly, you shouldn't waste your time doing it at all. The creator kills his own creation by altering his work.

Straight from the art
An artist should believe that the world has to change for him, and not he for the world. He has to be an extremist. If he has the guts to stand against the world then he is passionate about his work. Passion is like love. It can't be measured. Don't ask what is art doing for you, ask what are you doing for art!

A brush with reality
Unfortunately, young students too have become business oriented. They think that once they have a degree, they can paint on canvas and become famous. It's so wrong. Art is a medium to understand yourself and through you to understand the entire human race. Art is the master key to understanding life. And if you learn that lesson, success will run after you. You have to believe in yourself to become successful!
