Civic body plans to involve Bangaloreans in its wildlife initiatives; will soon upgrade its forest cell with hi-tech gadgets worth Rs 15 lakh

THE forest cell of the Bruhath Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which so far had quite grungy infrastructure, will go hi-tech soon.

The cell that handles over 180 species of birds and animals and carries out rescue operations in the city, as and when required, will be upgraded with hi-tech gadgets worth Rs 15 lakh.

Besides, through the Green Police project, the civic body intends to involve wildlife enthusiasts in rescue operations, as experts feel it will be of great help in creating awareness towards natural world amongst citizens.

The first set of equipment that include primate trap cages, leopard cages, imported grab sticks, tranquiliser guns, snake bags, sky canal and two well-equipped ambulances will give a boost to the wildlife rescue operations in city. Moreover, an office will also be made for the wildlife volunteers, said sources.

Consequently, the improved forest cell will open its doors for public in four months and Bangaloreans will be able to participate in rescue operations initiated by the cell.

"Green Police is one of our dream projects which is aimed at involving people in our wildlife initiatives.

However, it didn't work as planned due to lack of proper infrastructure. But now, I believe we'll be able to do what we had envisioned," added Babu.

Its development has come as a pleasant surprise for the city wildlife enthusiasts. "I'll surely volunteer. Besides, I welcome the decision taken by the civic body.

It's great that now we'll have a well-equipped cell to address issues pertaining to wildlife in the city," said K Karthik, a wildlife enthusiast.
