After mini cupcakes, macaroons and rolls, we now have a mini restaurant. Known for it’s yummy curries and a dish for which it’s held monopoly for years, the Kaukswe, Busaba recently opened its takeaway outlet, Busago in Bandra.
The eatery has a few tables both on the inside and on the porch, so you can choose to enjoy your meal at the restaurant with piped Jazz music in the background and a blackboard menu. Cosy, for starters.
The eatery’s speciality is that it offers mini versions of its popular dishes, meals in a bowl. We started with Vegetarian Momos (`155) and Prawn Momos (`165), a 100% All There (`185) smoothie and Great Hydrator (`145) juice .
It might seem like a big meal to start with, but Busago offers six pieces of mini dumplings, which can be gobbled with the same ease as Po did in Kung Fu Panda. The Vegetarian Dumplings made for a great start dunked in Busago’s special green dip, but a double thumbs up for the prawn version.
Dipped in the sweet and sour sauce accompaniment, the strong aroma of the prawn was masked well thanks to the right amount of steaming and the light flavours were retained at the same time; we wiped it off in three minutes flat.
Both beverages fared well on the taste meter, despite no artificial sweetening. They were served at room temperature and were good to fill your stomach, but definitely will not quench your thirst.
So, if you’re in the mood for an ice-cold indulgence with your dumplings, we suggest their ready-to-serve Coconut Nimbu Paani (`80), which is deliciously flavoured with ginger.
For the mains, we stuck to Chicken Kaukswe (`265), which you can order with plain rice or rice noodles; we opted for the latter. The Kaukswe is a traditional Burmese dish, a coconut-based curry eaten with rice or noodles, to which you add sauces, vegetables or meat (much like adding a topping of your choice to a pizza).
Busago serves its add-ons in tiny steel containers. Lovers of Kaukswe will not be disappointed; the curry with its chicken pieces was well cooked. Paired with a box of momos and a juice, it makes for a sumptuous meal for two.
Enticed by the desserts lined on the shelves, we fell for the Banoffee Pie (`175) and Chocolate Tart (`150) topped with bananas and chocolate shavings, the gooey toffee centre of the Banoffee is a must-have (we pray for those heading out of the gym across the road) and the Chocolate Tart kept our sugar levels and spirits high.
