According to the police, the two have been identified as David Devendran and Manikandan Nadar. The Manpada police had arrested them in robbery and attempt-to-murder cases. "During investigation, we found that Nadar was lodged in the jail since October 2016 and Devendran since August 2015," said an officer of the Khadakpada police.

The incident took place around 6.20 am on Sunday, when the inmates had been let out for breakfast. "There was a power cut in the prison. The duo cut off the wires of the CCTV cameras and used them to climb over the wall, which is more than 20 feet high. When they jumped onto the other side and crossed a pond, they spotted a man sitting on his bike and talking on his mobile phone. They assaulted him and fled on his bike," said a senior jail officer.

Speaking to mid-day, a police officer said, "The jail authorities came to know about the incident when they were doing a head count. We have taken the statement of the biker, who said the inmates couldn't have gone far, as his vehicle had only half-a-litre of petrol. He also said they might stop at a petrol pump or take a train from Kalyan station."
