When an opportunity allows you to tick every box that excites you as an actor, you grab it with both hands. Kritika Kamra did exactly that with The Great Shamsuddin Family, an upcoming family dramedy helmed by Anusha Rizvi. The JioHotstar film marks the director’s return 15 years after her acclaimed debut, Peepli Live (2010). Alongside Kamra, the film features an impressive ensemble that includes Juhi Babbar, Sheeba Chadha, Farida Jalal and Shreya Dhanwanthary. “There are so many brilliant women in film, and then I was getting the opportunity to work with Anusha, whose Peepli Live I loved. I was really interested in just her voice as a director,” says Kamra. Kritika Kamra In the film, Kamra plays Bani Ahmed, who is racing against a deadline amid the chaos stirred by her large, dysfunctional family. Her excitement about the role also stems from the belief that the character draws inspiration from Rizvi herself. “I could be starting this rumour, but I think it’s a little bit autobiographical. There were times on set when I would look at Anusha and ask her, ‘Why do you look dressed like my character?’ Besides the fun, you [see] a subliminal message that Anusha is known for. The film is about belonging, identity, a family, and the eldest-daughter syndrome. Although I’m not the eldest in the film, I’m that daughter who takes up the responsibility of being the problem solver for everybody. So, I think it comes from her own experiences,” she shares. Kamra says the film’s realism reflects Rizvi’s desire to explore a regular day in the lives of different women. “Anusha likes a very realistic, chaotic, not done-up kind of world. She said the other day, ‘I wanted to make a film about women where they are not going on a road trip, or there’s no big event being planned. I just want to see their relationships, the dynamic between sisters, cousins, different generations on a regular day’,” the actor recounts. The Great Shamsuddin Family marks Kamra’s third women-led project after Kaun Banegi Shikharwati (2022) and Hush Hush (2022). She hopes such opportunities keep coming. “I feel like I have gotten a bit spoilt. [If at] anytime there is an opportunity to work with a woman director and more women on set, I’d jump at it. I want to be a part of it because I’ve had enough experience to know that it is very different from a really male-dominated, testosterone-high set. I feel there are some stories that need to be told with vulnerability. Certain stories when written and directed by a woman have more layers. I really enjoy being a part of it and I am okay to be stereotyped with women-led projects,” she laughs.

Now, first-time director Ashish R Mohan tells mid-day that the family entertainer is set to wrap up soon, and he hopes to release it on Mother’s Day (May 10, 2026) or sometime in April. After a 40-day schedule in Shimla, Mohan shares that although most of the shoot is complete, some patchwork scenes, including an end-credit song, remain to be filmed in January. “I wanted to complete the film after I locked my release date. We had shot a song choreographed by Ganesh [Acharya] master in Shimla earlier this year, but a one-day shoot remained as there was talk of a [conflict between] India and Pakistan,” he recollects. On May 7, India launched strikes on Pakistan in an operation code-named Operation Sindoor. For safety, Mohan returned to Mumbai with the cast and crew. Riddhima Kapoor Sahni and Ashish R Mohan He shares that the finale number features “700 children from the schools in Shimla and outside and has the entire cast in it. 07 December,2025 07:29 AM IST | Mumbai | Upala KBRKangana Ranaut has once again grabbed attention for wearing her heart on her sleeve. She found herself making headlines after she visited Varanasi recently. A video went viral in which the actress is seen enjoying popular chaat, tikiya chole, in the city. However, after eating, many social media users accused her of tossing it onto the road. Kangana has now issued a clarification, calling the claims misleading and sharing photographic evidence. Kangana Ranaut issues clarification Kangana took to Instagram Stories to post a new picture from the stall. In the image, she marked an arrow pointing towards a dustbin. She asserted that she, too, had placed her plate in that dustbin. She called out a news portal, writing, “Selective clips and twisted captions are not journalism; they are propaganda. Verify facts before publishing lies.” About Kangana Ranaut Kangana started her political career in 2024 when she contested on a BJP ticket and won the Lok Sabha elections 2024 from the Mandi constituency. In a recent podcast, she was asked if she enjoys her political career. To this, Kangana said, “I’m getting a hang of it. I wouldn’t say that I am enjoying it (politics). It’s a very different kind of work, more like social service. This hasn’t been my background. I’ve never thought of serving people. I’ve fought for women’s rights, but that’s different... Somebody’s naali (drain) is broken, and I’m like, ‘But I am an MP, and these people are coming to me with panchayat-level problems’.” “When they see you, they come to you with problems like MLAs, broken roads, and I tell them that’s a state government issue, and they say, ‘You have money, you use your own money,’” she added. When it comes to Bollywood, she was most recently seen in Emergency. Based on Indira Gandhi’s political life, the film received a lukewarm response at the box office. It also starred Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman and Mahima Chaudhry in pivotal roles. According to Variety, Kangana is now set to make her Hollywood debut with the upcoming horror film Blessed Be The Evil, produced by US-based Lions Movies. She will star alongside Teen Wolf actor Tyler Posey and Scarlet Rose Stallone.

06 December,2025 07:16 PM IST | Mumbai | IANSIn recent days, several well-known actors, including Aditi Rao Hydari, Sara Arjun, Shriya Saran and Rakul Preet Singh, have spoken up about a growing and unsettling problem: fake accounts pretending to be them. These imposters have been using their photos, names and even look-alike phone numbers to contact people, offer fake work opportunities or simply start random conversations. For many in the industry, this has become more than just a nuisance; it feels like a real invasion of privacy. Aditi Rao Hydari and Shriya Saran talk about the imposter Aditi Rao Hydari was among the first to raise concern when she discovered that someone was using her pictures and name to offer bogus photoshoots to photographers. She clarified that all professional communication goes strictly through her team and urged everyone to stay alert and avoid responding to suspicious messages. Shriya Saran had a similarly disturbing experience. An impersonator reached out to her acquaintances, sending inappropriate messages while pretending to be her. She described the situation as both upsetting and alarming, reminding people that anyone receiving such messages should immediately verify the source and not take them at face value. Sara Arjun raises concern Young actor Sara Arjun also found herself dealing with an imposter account. Her father shared screenshots of a number pretending to be her, prompting Sara to publicly confirm that she has only one official social-media profile. She encouraged fans to stay cautious and not fall for any other accounts or claims made in her name. Rakul Preet Singh, too, called out a fake number pretending to be her and contacting people as if it were her personal line. She expressed her frustration, saying that this kind of impersonation isn’t just unethical, it’s an actual crime. She mentioned her intention to report the matter to the cybercrime authorities. Across the film industry, celebrities are feeling increasingly concerned about how easily their identity can be misused online. Many have said that while fame does come with unwanted attention, this kind of deception crosses a line. They’re urging fans, colleagues and the public to remain vigilant, double-check any unexpected communication, and report fake accounts immediately. In a digital world where anyone can pretend to be anyone, these actors are simply asking for one thing: awareness.
06 December,2025 06:15 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentGulshan Devaiah has been on a roll with his back-to-back projects that have yet again proven his acting prowess. The actor, in real life, is as bold and strong as he is in reel life. Gulshan has always taken up projects that challenge him as an actor, and that is what has kept the Kantara actor sustained in the entertainment business for almost 15 years. With the social media game evolving like never before, has the casting game also changed? When IANS asked Gulshan about it, the actor, without mincing words, said, “I don’t give a shit. It’s a trend. Is it valid? Does it have any real merit? I don’t know.” “I’m not sure if all those followers are actually translating into subscriptions or ticket sales. I don’t know. But somebody who knows better than me is taking these decisions, and maybe they think it’s a good idea to hire someone based on that.” He added, “Some of those people are actually pretty decent, too; they are good actors. I don’t want to say anything negative about anyone. Everyone should find their own way.” Citing his own social media example, Devaiah said, “Now open my social media and see how many followers I have. I don’t even have 300K. Yet, I am getting work.” When IANS further asked if he ever feels the need or the pressure to keep up with the social media trends and game, Gulshan said, “No, I am not taking that pressure. People are making reels and trending content — that’s up to them. It’s not up to my management. It’s not even up to the audience or my fans. It’s only up to me. If they like me and follow my work, it’s because I am the way I am. If I suddenly start changing for social media and become someone else, then I won’t be myself. My authentic self — that’s what matters to me!” The actor has been receiving a great response for his recently released show The Perfect Family, which also stars National Crush Girija Oak opposite him. The series highlights the mental health stigma prevailing in almost every Indian household. The show has been lauded for its sensitive storytelling and powerful performances. The series also stars Seema Pahwa and Manoj Pahwa and has been produced by Pankaj Tripathi and Ajay Rai and directed by Sachin Pathak. 06 December,2025 06:14 PM IST | Mumbai | IANSFor the last few weeks, a high-stakes inheritance battle over late businessman Sunjay Kapur’s personal estate worth thousands of crores has been playing out in the Delhi High Court. The dispute is between Sunjay’s third wife, Priya Kapur, and Karisma Kapoor’s kids, Kiaan and Samaira. Last month, Karisma’s kids accused Priya of not paying Samaira’s US college fees of Rs 95 lakh, while Sunjay’s mother, Rani, alleged that she has concealed assets. She has now responded to these claims. Priya Kapur calls allegations factually incorrect As reported by Law Beat, Senior Advocate Shyel Trehan, appearing for Priya, made the submission before Justice Jyoti Singh during the recent hearing. He was responding to an argument made by counsel representing Karisma Kapoor and her children, who had claimed that two months’ fees of Rs 95 lakh remained unpaid. Calling the allegations "factually incorrect," Priya's advocate produced a payment receipt of Rs 95 lakh and informed the court that the next installment is due in December. She also claimed that Priya had been independently bearing all educational and living expenses of the children since Sunjay Kapur’s death. The latest hearing comes shortly after Priya’s lawyer, Rajiv Nayar, criticised accusations made by Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, regarding alleged concealment of the late businessman’s assets. Nayar said, “I have filed a detailed list of assets, and every transaction is in the list of assets… No money has been moved abroad.” The lawyers representing Rani Kapur claimed that Priya had concealed the value of Sunjay’s assets. Rani alleged that Sunjay’s salary was Rs 60 crore per year, along with luxury assets and a 6.5 per cent stake in Sona Comstar valued at roughly Rs 650 crore. However, Priya showed only Rs 1.7 crore in bank accounts. About Sunjay Kapur’s property dispute Ever since businessman Sunjay Kapur’s death, his family has been fighting over his will and assets worth Rs 30,000 crore. Karisma Kapoor’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, have moved the Delhi High Court to demand a share in the assets of their late father, Sunjay Kapur. They also accused Priya of forging the will and claimed that they have not received their share, which is worth Rs 1,900 crore.
06 December,2025 04:51 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentDirector: Aditya DharActors: Ranveer Singh, Akshaye KhannaRating: 2 stars Aditya Dhar’s directed Dhurandhar. The latter is supposedly an operation by Indian intelligence that’s literally a one-man mission, set in the Lyari neighbourhood of Karachi, Pakistan. The former debuted with Uri (2019), a pure actioner, posing as the untold classified story of Indian Army’s retaliation to the terrorist attack on a brigade headquarters in Jammu & Kashmir, 2016. It’d appear Dhar’s core competence lies in some sorta super serious access to state agencies that supply him unlimited info on events — seemingly unknown to politicians, bureaucrats, think tanks, journalists combined — to script stories behind India’s biggest undercover moves, suitably chapterised. Such was the case with Uri, shot in Serbia. As with Article 370, written-produced by Dhar. Likewise, Dhurandhar. Which, though, opens with immense promise for one of the most powerful underworld dramas, witnessed in Hindi movies, for the longest. Treat this, foremost, as ‘Satya of Karachi’, if you may, veering toward Sarkar, on occasion, exhilaratingly dealing with empowered dons of another maximum city, right across the Arabian Sea, from Mumbai. As it is, those who’ve been to Mumbai and Karachi find enough similarities between both, including its 1990s like chaotic underworld (Mutthahida Quami Movement; MQM), its messy links with politicians (Pakistan People’s Party; PPP), their ganglords getting elevated in organised crime, and hit-men roaming the streets, equally dodging ‘encounter specialists’. For a book recco, consider Anatol Lieven’s Pakistan: A Hard Country (2011). To be fair, Satya was written, directed by filmmakers, who were themselves new to Mumbai. Fairer still to suggest, Dhurandhar has been performed, written, directed by those who haven’t ever stepped a foot in Karachi, and perhaps never will. So, never mind this dust-bowl for a city that, by and large, seems wholly bereft of a single modern building, and looks mostly bombed-out, between multiple ghettos. But that’s roughly how the West shows the brown Third World in actioners with a certain sepia tone (check: Extraction, set in Dhaka, Bangladesh). Clichés like Roohafza for prop, or Ghulam Ali for background music, is all about that you’ll get to seep into the setting! Karachi = corny. Zero in on the key characters, instead. They’re indeed based on well-known blokes of the Lyari underworld. Top result on Google should show you that. And that’s what, first, got me hugely engaging with this drama. That is, matching real-life men to this mob opera. Whether that be the famously shifty Karachi cop, known for extrajudicial killings, ‘Chaudhary Aslam Khan’ (Sanjay Dutt). Or the cousin in the crime syndicate, ‘Uzbair Baloch’, who will eventually rise up the ranks to rule. Indeed, even the MQM politician, i.e. the adorable comedian, Rakesh Bedi, looking more like Tikku Talsania, who’s the Bhau-type fella from Satya! But more so, you can’t take your eyes off Rahman Dakait. As in Akshaye Khanna, the lean mean machine, letting his quiet, laconic expressions, as usual, steal the damn show. He’s making a happy habit of bringing gravitas to mania on the mainstream screen. Take him as Aurangzeb in Chhaava (2025). Take him out of it. The whole movie is simply a bunch of warriors screeching their lungs out. Watch him here, even as he suddenly shrieks on the mic, in the brilliantly executed mass-rally sequence, where Rahman Dakait is publicly endorsed by PPP. You just wanna watch him more, and more. With just enough subtlety, and some confidence in the written material, Dhurandhar had the makings of a sufficiently desi Godfather! But this isn’t an underworld drama. Those guys I’m referring to appear more like contextless villains in a completely blood-and-gore orgy, to do with an Indian hero, who’s infiltrated the Baloch mob. This hero lands without any personal backstory, whatsoever, except that he’s been planted by the top Intelligence Bureau mandarin, the wonderfully cast R Madhavan, as an Ajit Doval like figure, and personally approved by the Indian Prime Minister. That’s the long-haired, heavy-hitter Ranveer Singh, as Rambo, more like El Mariachi/Antonio Banderas, in a curry western, causing mayhem as he goes along, surrounded by Kalashnikovs, two-door Datsuns, dragging blokes through the streets, breaking knuckles, killing men by the minute… This Indian dude is a desperado, not very different from any other spy of the James Bond mould, where the stakes are phenomenally high, and the man, in service of the state, will win all. If this looks like some kinda jingoist propaganda; well, all spy thrillers, by their very nature/genre, are. That’s not the issue, if it ever was. The issue is if you’re more interested in the villains than the hero of the bloody piece as he’s gaslighting a 19-year-old girl, while, apparently, in love with her. And that he sits in a room with everyone, from the local mafia to the ISI, handholding 26/11 attackers from live TV, in Karachi. The screen turns red. You hear the actual recorded conversations between these handlers and terrorists from Hotel Taj. The next scene is Ranveer as Hamza with a dialogue about Ghayal and Ghatak, as if reprising Sunny Deol. Tiger-type spy universes make no claim to documentary truths. You see them for what they are. It’s hard when to take this film seriously, and how to let it simply go — as characters turn into caricatures, and morning slip into late afternoon, with Dhurandhar going on for way over three and half hours. And it’s still to be continued, when it finally ends! As it is, I’ve lost count of the number of films with a lone Indian spy in the midst of Pak establishment, lately. Some, at best, hit the board, but miss the mark, say, Saare Jahan Se Accha (2025), Netflix series, that this film should’ve been. At least one, Raazi (2018), pierced the bull’s eye. This one’s eyeing footfalls like Pushpa 2! Look at the kinda money they’ve spent on making it. But I would’ve spent the exact same amount of money, watching something less muddled, more sorted too; no?
