Officials from BKC’s cyber crime police station have arrested a 26-year-old from Pune, who allegedly stalked an 18-year-old college girl from Mumbai online and harassed her by posting vulgar comments on her posts and photos on a social networking site. Police have learnt that accused had harassed many other girls similarly.

According to the cops, in December last year, the girl had lodged a complaint with the cyber crime police station at BKC, stating that one Avinash Nale has been harassing her online by uploading obscene content on the comment section of her posts and photos.

A police team headed by Assistant Inspector Sarika Thorat, under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime) M Rajkumar and Senior Inspector in-charge Kalpana Gadekar, probed the matter and, on Thursday, arrested the accused.

“Nale, who is a junior college dropout, is a welder by profession and is presently unemployed. He would randomly send requests to girls on Facebook, and would then stalk and harass them,” said API Thorat.

“He had posted vulgar photos on the comment section of the complainant’s display picture. Despite repeated requests and warning by the girl, Nale continued to harass her,” another officer said.

He had not used a picture for his profile, but was using a genuine his name in the profile. Thorat said that the accused would harass those girls on Facebook whose profiles are public and was not protected from the ‘private’ (safety) feature.

Nale has been arrested under relevant sections of Information technology Act and was released on bail by the police on the same day, as the offence is a bailable one.
