Revenue secretary said 60K officials will be trained on GST laws

New Delhi: A day after the unanimous passage of the GST bill by the Rajya Sabha, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia yesterday said April 1, 2017, would be the target date for the rollout of this pan-India indirect tax regime.

Adhia said the government hoped all required bills connected with the GST rollout would be taken up for passage during the Winter Session of the Parliament. "By December 2016, all the back-end and front-end IT systems required for GST are expected to be ready," he said, adding 60,000 officers will be trained pan-India, even as wide outreach programme will be launched for trade and industry.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, "Over the long term, tax rates will come down, and then it is natural that many commodities will see lowering of prices."
