Serena Williams says she is so desperate to get back on the tennis court she would even consider playing Indian Wells an event she and her sister have boycotted for the past decade.
"At this point I would play Indian Wells ufffd anything to get back," Williams told The Desert Sun newspaper yesterday.
The 13-time major winner Williams and her older sister Venus have boycotted the Indian Wells tournament ever since 2001 when Serena was fiercely booed as she played Kim Clijsters in the final.
The crowd was angry after Venus defaulted to Serena complaining of a bout of tendinitis just moments before they were scheduled to go head-to-head in the semi-finals.
Father Richard Williams was so upset with the boos that he had to call for security as he watched Serena and Clijsters from the stands.
u00a0"I don't know if I've had my share of drama but I have definitely had my share of hard times," said Serena, who grew up in the crime-ridden, drug plagued south central Los Angeles.
Serena Williams has not played a top-level match since last year's Wimbledon final after cutting her right foot on broken glass at a restaurant last July.
Williams then suffered a pulmonary embolism and underwent an emergency operation recently at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, a health scare she called "the scariest moment in my life".
