The civic body has completed the tender process and will soon issue the work order for a wastewater treatment plant at Colaba.
The plant will treat 37 MLD (million litres daily) of wastewater from the Colaba, Fort and CST areas. The plant, part of the Municipal Sewage Disposal Project (MSDP), will be built at the estimated cost of Rs 300 crore and is expected to be completed in three years.

There had been an issue regarding mangroves in the proposed area, but now the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has procured all necessary permissions for the project, including environmental clearance. “The plant will be built on DBOT (Design, Built, Operate and Transfer) basis. We expect to start work in three months, and complete it in three years.
The plant will have the capacity of treating 37 MLD waste water,” said a senior officer from the MSDP department. The plant will treat sewage water for Colaba region, which will help improve the quality of sea water, as only the treated water will be let into it.
The present sewage discharge consent standards (according to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and the Central Pollution Control Board) are as per December 2006.
BMC has carried out a feasibility study for sewage disposal needs up to the year 2025 and has prepared an MSDP (Stage-2) Master Plan. Mumbai has a 1,500 km long sewage network which collects 1,700 MLD of sewage through 51 pumping stations. However, the network is not enough to treat sewage water.
To deal with this, the BMC has prepared the Master Plan which will amount to more than Rs 5,500 crore. The project will be funded by JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission). “We have got all the necessary clearances for the project. Now, we hope to start the project in next few months,” said chief engineer, MSDP, M G Mane.
