Trade analysts are waiting for the week's collections to decipher whether Aamir Khan's film is a hit or a miss

'Talaash' gets Rs 44.46 crore in its first weekend

Aamir Khan’s film Talaash released on November 30 - a non-holiday Friday. While most of B-Town’s Khans plan a release on Eid or Diwali or Christmas, Aamir’s gamble seems to have paid off at least in its first weekend. Trade analysts feel that it is too early to determine if it is a hit or not as the weekday collections will determine its fate at the box office.

The collections for Talaash for its first weekend are Rs 44.46 crore (Friday Rs 12.74, Saturday Rs 14.61 and Sunday Rs 17.11). While Life of Pi’s first week collection was Rs 19.85 and a Rs 1 crore weekend makes its total for the first 10 days to Rs 20.85. On the other hand the two Diwali releases collections - Son Of Sardaar is Rs 102.75 and Jab Tak Hai Jaan is Rs 118 crore.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, “The first day was okay and there was a very nominal increase on the second day. Sunday saw a huge jump. The film has got thumbs up from critics and the gentry audience while in the single screens the film is just about okay. The actual position will be known after we see the weekdays collections.

The first three days saw Aamir fans coming in and now the film will speak for itself. The audiences have not liked the climax of the film. Next week there is a massy film like Khiladi 786, which will affect its collections. However the film is huge in the overseas market.”

While trade analyst Atul Mohan opines, “The film has done well but the heavy price tag is its undoing. Its an very expensive film in the range of Rs 80-90 crore without P & A so it might just breakeven and that also depends on the performance of the film during the course of the week. Ultimately with the other rights it will recover but we have to see its theatrical performance and a lot of factors depend on that.”
