After teasing taste buds in New York, the sushi-burrito mash-up arrives in Mumbai. We give you a taste of this hybrid roll

The sushirrito follows the principles of a sushi, with the filling being wrapped in a vinegared rice-layered nori sheet

We've all had cravings for sushi and burritos, but mostly separately. So, when news got around that chef Rahul Hajarnavis of Shiro's in Worli, has decided to bring home the international concept of sushirrito — an innovative combination of sushi and burrito in Asian flavours — the temptation was too much to resist. The sushirrito follows the same principles of a sushi — a nori sheet is placed on a bamboo roller (makisu), vinegared rice is spread on the nori and stuffed with filling. Out of the six sushirritos on the menu, we sampled three. Here’s what we thought!

Katsu Chicken Sushirrito (Rs 395)
Being meat lovers, we picked the Katsu chicken first. The burrito comes coated in sticky, vinegared rice and is filled with chunks of panko-crusted chicken breast (oven-‘fried’ chicken), shiitake mushrooms and red cabbage. One bite into the wrap and you feel the goodness of veggies and chicken blending beautifully.

Togarashi, a peppery Japanese condiment and the spicy teriyaki mayo give it the right amount of punch. As we continue to chomp, we realise it’s more than just a snack, and can double up as a mini meal.

Red Dragon Sushirrito (Rs 495)
It’s almost sacrilege to order sushirrito and not try their signature seafood item. This one also comes stuffed with Scottish salmon, avocado, iceberg lettuce, cucumber, red cabbage, mixed greens and sunflower seeds. Unfortunately, it doesn’t match up to our expectations. The blandness of salmon is overpowering in the first bite. Undaunted, we soldier on, only to learn that it does get better. When the wrap is stuffed with so many ingredients, individual flavours tend to get buried. Sometimes, it’s for the right reasons.

Thai Crunch Sushirrito (Rs 345)
The vegetarian sushi turns out to be palatable. With fresh mushrooms, wonton crisps, water chestnuts and thai basil sauce, it tastes a lot like the other sushirritos, except there’s no chicken. In fact, they all fundamentally, taste the same. But, we suggest you give it a try, for its novelty factor.
