The added joy is because of the fact that the wedding preparations have coincided with Onam celebrations, and the marriage is at Tharoor's ancestral home, where Shivashankari lives, in Elevenchery, a village near Palakkad, unlike his two previous weddings.

"I am happy to see the wedding will take place here," she said. "This Onam is really auspicious for us."
She wants Tharoor to leave the memories of his past marriages behind.

"I had felt bad when his marriage fell apart twice. Now, I only pray that my grandson will get peace and prosperity," she added.

Although she is yet to meet Sunanda, Shivashankari said that she looked pretty when she saw her on TV, and commented, "The pair is made for each other."

While the family is planning for a simple wedding, the house is being renovated and whitewashed traditionally.

"We are expecting a small gathering and so there are no big arrangements," said Narayan Unni, Tharoor's maternal uncle, who is overseeing the wedding preparations.

"However, a bright ambiance is building up with the villagers chipping in voluntarily."

Tharoor, with his mother Lilly and his twin sons- Ishaan and Kanishk (from his first marriage to Tilottama Mukherjee), is expected to arrive on August 20, while Sunanda, will stay at Kalari Kovilakam, a luxury ayurveda palace in Kollengode, Palakkad, with his son, on August 21, before coming for the wedding.

Ishan writes for the Time magazine from Hong Kong, and Kanishk edits Open Democracy, a magazine, from London. Tharoor's sister Smitha is based in London and Shubha, who is settled in the US, are also expected to arrive.

Unni said that the wedding would be in traditional Kerala style, while a reception was arranged on August 23 in Thiruvananthapuram. The final reception will be held in New Delhi, on September 3.

While Sunanda will be draped in kasavu mundu worth Rs 2,000 for the wedding, she has designedu00a0 the outfits for herself and Tharoor for the functions, on her own, according to a source in Tharoor's family.
