Two cops lose their lives in accident on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

Due to heavy rains that lashed the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, two policemen attached to the Mumbai Police died in an accident on the Mumbai-Pune expressway on Friday afternoon, after the driver of a Renault Duster lost control due to the mist and later fell into a 10 feet quarry

Due to heavy rains that lashed the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, two policemen attached to the Mumbai Police died in an accident on the Mumbai-Pune expressway on Friday afternoon, after the driver of a Renault Duster lost control due to the mist and later fell into a 10 feet quarry. Vehicle's driver and and survivng occupant, a lawyer, are currently undergoing treatment at a Pune hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Arjun Kengar (47) and Satish Shinde (51). The driver Arnold Richard and a person named Chhatrapati are undergoing treatment at Pune's Lokmanya hospital in Nigdi.

A case of accidental death has been registered with Wadgoan Maval police station, which comes under the jurisdiction of Pune rural police.

The mishap took place around 2 pm at Mumbai-Pune expressway near Kamshet tunnel. The incident came to light after Zabiuddin Shaikh from the IRB control room person alerted the police.

Inspector Vijay Jadhav in-charge of Wadgoan Maval police station, who is investigating the case said, ''Deceased Arjun is Inspector incharge of Worli police station while Satish is a constable attached to Mumbai police headquarters . Both were on leave and were en route to their their hometown in Satara. The rains had increased in the area and due to fog the driver dashed the road divider and then lost control of the car.''"

He added, '' the Renault Duster (MH-46-T-7227) then turned turtle and fell in the 10 ft quarry near the Expressway and was pulled up with the aid of cranes. The policemen died on the spot while the driver and lawyer were rushed to Lokmanya Hospital in Nigdi. The latter named Chhatrapati is critical, while the driver Richard escaped with minor injuries.''
