When you run short of ideas for a television serial and do not want to incorporate the usual saas-bahu stuff, what do you do?

Ask director Sunil Agnihotri who has directed Akshay Kumar-starrers like Jai Kishen and Daava apart from Chandrakanta, Betaal and Yug. He is making a serial based on Manmohan Desais 1973 film Aa Gale Lag Ja and is also using the films songs in the serial produced by Daanish Syscom.

The story is the same and so is the name Aa Gale Lag Ja. I dont want people to tell me later that the serial looks similar, so I would rather agree that it is the same. I have Mamik playing Shashi Kapoor, Mona Ambegaonkar playing Sharmila Tagore and Tinnu Anand playing Om Prakash.

I have a lot of songs in the serial, which will be shot more like a musical. I shall be coming out with regular cassettes of the serial because of the number of songs that I am using, says Agnihotri.

He adds that his serial even starts with a number from Aa Gale Lag Jaa. Remember the song Gaadi bula rahi hai? The serial starts with that song and the handicapped kid coming back home by train. He meets his mother in the train and she is unaware that he is her son. The story moves on from there, says Agnihotri.

Incidentally, some other serials like Kaahin Kissii Roz and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii had lifted plots out of Satte Pe Satta and Parwana as well.

Aa Gale Lag Ja will air on Zee TV by September-end
