Central Railway has registered impressive freight loading figures for April 2026, moving 6.72 million tonnes (MT) of cargo in 2,582 rakes and generating revenue of Rs 708.14 crore.
The railway loaded 6.72 MT in April 2026 as compared to 6.57 MT in April 2025, registering a growth of over 2 per cent in tonnage. The number of rakes also increased from 2,490 to 2,582, marking an addition of 92 rakes.
Nagpur division leads
Nagpur division continued to be the highest contributor with 3.97 MT (59 per cent of total loading) and revenue of Rs 432.16 crore (61 per cent). Mumbai division followed with 1.59 MT (24 per cent) and revenue of Rs 150.40 crore (21 per cent).
Other divisions also performed well - Solapur (0.59 MT), Bhusaval (0.43 MT) and Pune (0.14 MT).
Commodity-wise performance
Coal remained the top commodity with 820 rakes and 3.24 MT, contributing Rs 297.38 crore. Containers stood second with 770 rakes and revenue of Rs 79.62 crore. Petroleum products, iron & steel, and cement were the other major contributors.
New milestone in automobile transport
In a significant development, Central Railway commenced the first-ever loading of automobiles from the newly notified Igatpuri Goods Shed. As many as 100 cars manufactured by Mahindra & Mahindra at Nashik were loaded in 25 NMG wagons for transportation to Nautanwa Goods Terminal in Uttar Pradesh. Each rake is expected to generate revenue of approximately Rs 17.16 lakh.
Freight revenue rose more than 4 per cent to Rs 708.14 crore in April 2026 from Rs 680.05 crore in the corresponding month last year.
Commenting on the performance, railway officials said sustained focus on infrastructure development, faster turnaround of rakes, and new initiatives like automobile loading from Igatpuri have helped improve freight operations.
Central Railway said it continues to play a vital role in supporting key sectors of the economy by ensuring smooth movement of coal, petroleum products, cement, fertilizers, foodgrains, and other essential commodities.
The Central Railway has intensified its crackdown on the misuse of the Foreign Tourist (FT) Quota, detecting 39 irregular booking cases and recovering Rs 3.56 lakh in penalties from offenders.
As per an official statement from Central Railway, the action follows an incident reported on February 4, 2026, aboard Train No 12296 Sanghamitra Express, where several Indian passengers were found travelling on FT quota tickets without possessing the mandatory documents required for foreign nationals.
