Stand-up comedian Gaurav Gupta has faced backlash on social media over a video from his comedy show that has gone viral. In the clip, he is seen making remarks about a woman's surname, husband and accent, leaving netizens unhappy with his approach. Several users criticised the comedian, questioning his humour and calling out his remarks as disrespectful.
In the video, Gupta addresses a woman in the audience as "Yadavni", referring to her Yadav surname. When she confirms the term but says she does not like being called that, he reacts with surprise and asks her, "These are your cultural roots, right?"
The woman responds, "I don't like the sound of it." Gupta then makes a remark about her husband, saying, "Bania husband hai tumhara (Your husband is a Bania)."
He subsequently turns his attention to her accent and asks whether she is from abroad or Gurgaon. Upon learning that she hails from Gurugram, he then adds, "Gurgaon se toh kis cheez ka attitude hai itna (If you are from Gurgaon, what is there to have so much attitude about)?"
Mocking her way of speaking, Gupta says, "Your accent is something else, as if you have landed here straight from Oxford."
His exchange did not go down well with netizens, who slammed him for mocking the woman. One wrote, "If your comedy depends on humiliating someone in the audience to make everyone else laugh, it isn't clever comedy. Making people laugh takes talent. Making one person the joke is easy. The best humour leaves everyone laughing, including the person it is about."
Another commented, "I have met men like him. They make fun of your accent and mock it just so they can have a try at talking like you. But the thing is, you'll never be as confident n cool as us women. You're unfunny, ugly m0rons who do demeaning shit like this n call it humour."
A third user wrote, "You're not good at your job as a comedian, and people should probably not pay to see you." Another wrote, "If he talked like that to my partner or a friend, I'd ensure he never gets to speak in public ever again. Wonder how her husband laughed through this entire bit."
