Bollywood veteran actor Jaya Bachchan grabbed attention during the INDIA bloc's protest in Delhi on October 6 after she appeared to swat away a reporter's microphone during a brief exchange. The Samajwadi Party MP was approached by a journalist while the Opposition protest was underway, but the interaction ended almost as quickly as it began, with Bachchan pushing the microphone away.
The moment was captured on camera and soon became a talking point on social media. Bachchan's reaction came as Opposition parties took to the streets in the national capital over their concerns regarding electoral rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The journalist reportedly questioned Bachchan about a poster at the demonstration concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Instead of continuing the interaction, Bachchan was seen moving the microphone away with her hand and saying, "I won't tell you."
The actor-turned-politician also spoke to ANI about the Opposition's stand during the protest, accusing the ruling party of making allegations against them. "BJP's job is to make allegations. They are in power, so they will do that. We are doing our work...We will act according to whatever instructions our party leadership gives us," she said.
Bachchan also invoked Lord Ganesha while speaking about the ongoing political dispute. "Ganesh ji doesn't help in wrong things. We begin prayers with offering prayers to Ganesh; He will protect us," she said.
The incident took place as the INDIA bloc stepped up its campaign against alleged discrepancies in electoral rolls. Opposition leaders and workers marched towards the ECI headquarters in Delhi, demanding greater transparency from the poll panel.
The demonstration also focused on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with the Opposition calling for the exercise to be cancelled. The bloc has also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Bachchan, who has been a Samajwadi Party MP in the Rajya Sabha, joined other Opposition leaders at the demonstration. While her comments focused on the broader political dispute, it was her brief interaction with the media that drew attention, particularly the moment she pushed the reporter's microphone away.
The footage has since added another viral moment to Bachchan's often candid interactions with the media, with the actor-turned-politician once again making headlines for her no-nonsense response to reporters.
