Actress and vlogger Shenaz Treasury's recent comments on India's cleanliness have gone viral. The Ishq Vishk actress, who is now a full-time travel influencer and vlogger, had recently visited Sri Lanka. She was impressed by the country's cleanliness and the civic sense that helps maintain it. The actress shared a video of the popular Ella railway station in Sri Lanka.
While filming the surroundings, Shenaz pointed to the neat environment and made a blunt remark, "Let's face it. We are the dirtiest country." The clip soon went viral, with netizens sharing their opinions on the video, her statement, and India's approach towards cleanliness.
Many agreed with Shenaz's statement and blamed poor education, lack of civic sense, and overcrowding for the issue. Others compared public behaviour in India with that in foreign countries, noting that public spaces are often treated carelessly despite repeated cleanliness drives and awareness campaigns.
However, some also criticised Shenaz's statement and called it unfair. Many cited examples of Indian cities and tourist destinations known for maintaining high cleanliness standards.
Several users also took to the actress' social media handle to troll her, with some even calling her "anti-national" over her remarks.
Amid the criticism, Shenaz took to her social media handle to respond. Sharing a news article about her video, where the statement "India is the dirtiest country" was highlighted, she said she stands by her remarks.
"I stand by what I said. India is beautiful, but too many people still spit and throw garbage everywhere. The only way things change is through strict fines for littering and spitting," she wrote.
She further wrote, "Tum mujhe troll kar lo, anti national bol lo...par sach yeh hia ki India mein log har jagah thookte hain aur kachra phekte hain. Aur iska solution sirf ek hai: heavy fine. Thookoge ya kacra phekoge=pocket pe maar.
She further wrote on her Instagram stories, "Patriotism is not blindly accepting garbage, pollution, honking, paan stains and tree cutting. Real patriotism is wanting better for your country. Wanting clean streets. Clean air. Walkable cities. More trees. Less noise. Less filth. Real patriotism is speaking up instead of saying "chalta hai." And the people trolling me for saying the truth? You are not protecting India. You are protecting bad behaviour."
