Netflix's The Royals is facing another reported shake-up behind the camera, with the second season bringing a new director into the picture once again. After Jasmeet K. Reen reportedly exited the project shortly after filming began, Mitakshara Kumar took over the directorial duties. Now, a fresh report says Kumar has also stepped away, with Tanuj Chopra set to take charge. The development adds another twist to the production of the romantic drama led by Ishaan Khatter. While the makers have not publicly confirmed every detail, the repeated changes have drawn attention to the creative direction of the upcoming season.

Why Mitakshara Kumar has reportedly left The Royals 2

According to Variety India, Kumar and the team parted ways amicably because her creative vision was reportedly incompatible with theirs. The publication quoted a source saying, "Her vision was incompatible with the team's." Kumar had taken over after Reen's reported exit in September. She is known for assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali on films including Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat and Gangubai Kathiawadi, and for directing episodes of Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Kumar had begun directing in Jaipur, with Nitya Mehra expected to join the project. The latest report, however, names Chopra as the new director, highlighting how quickly the production situation appears to have evolved.

Who is Tanuj Chopra?

Tanuj Chopra is an Indian-American filmmaker known for directing episodes of Netflix's crime drama Delhi Crime. His experience with the series, which combines crime investigation with complex characters, brings a different body of work to The Royals. According to Variety India, Netflix suggested Tanuj Chopra after Kumar's departure, and filming has shifted from Jaipur to Mumbai. The production has reportedly resumed without major disruption, although the latest change raises questions about whether the creative approach to Season 2 will differ from the original plan.

What to expect from The Royals season 2

Ishaan Khatter is expected to return to the series, alongside Nora Fatehi and other cast members. Reports have also named Sini Shetty and Gurfateh Pirzada among the new additions, while Bhumi Pednekar is reportedly not returning. The first season followed a royal family trying to revive its fortunes through a luxury hospitality venture, mixing romance, family tensions and palace intrigue. The second season is expected to continue exploring the family's relationships and changing circumstances. For now, Netflix and the production team have not publicly confirmed all the reported director changes. With filming underway, viewers will have to wait for an official update to learn how the new season is taking shape.
