AR Rahman
Oscar winning composer AR Rahman has responded to the controversy sparked by his recent comments suggesting there may be "communal" bias in the Hindi film industry. Addressing the backlash, the music maestro urged people not to overinterpret his words and stressed that he never intended to hurt anyone.
Rahman's earlier remarks had drawn criticism after he appeared to connect his relatively limited work in Bollywood over the past eight years to shifting power dynamics within the industry. Reflecting on the situation, he said, "Maybe I never get to know of this, maybe it was concealed⦠but the past eight years, maybe because the power shift has happened, and people who are not creative have the power now. It might be a communal thing alsoâ¦" The statement quickly triggered debate online, with some questioning his claim while others defended his perspective.
Amid the growing discussion, Rahman addressed the issue during a recent podcast appearance. He said, "But you know what, it's better we move on with something else because people who know you don't need an explanation. And when you explain, they won't listen to you, those who don'tâ¦" His remark suggested that he preferred to focus on his work rather than engage in prolonged controversy.
Earlier, Rahman had also shared a video message clarifying his stance. He acknowledged that his "intentions can sometimes be misunderstood," adding that he never meant to offend or cause pain through his comments. Emphasising his lifelong artistic mission, he stated, "Music has always been my way to connect, celebrate and honour India's culture," while describing the country as both his inspiration and home.
The composer's clarification has prompted mixed reactions within the entertainment industry. While some colleagues believe his words were taken out of context, others have disagreed with the suggestion of communal bias in Bollywood. Despite the differing opinions, Rahman's message remained focused on moving forward rather than dwelling on misunderstandings.
By stressing that explanations are often unnecessary for those who understand him, AR Rahman sought to calm the controversy and redirect attention to his music. His response highlights a desire for unity and creative expression, reinforcing the values that have long defined his celebrated career.
