Akhil Kaimal
He didn't take the traditional route to Bollywood, but an unconventional career path brought actor Akhil Kaimal closer to his dream. Before moving to Mumbai in 2021, the Chand Mera Dil actor spent four years in Kerala, studying acting and working in Malayalam cinema. Along the way, he found an unexpected calling in casting. "Casting felt closest to acting because you're involved in auditions, observing actors, giving cues, and understanding performances. It also allowed me to earn a living," says Kaimal, who used the same route to break into the Hindi film industry.

The experience also changed his perspective on rejection. "One of the biggest lessons casting taught me was that rejection isn't always about talent. For example, if 100 actors audition and the director shortlists 10, that's already an achievement because it means your performance has been appreciated. After that, other factors come into play - looks, suitability, producer preferences, among other things."
Kaimal made his Bollywood debut with The Kerala Story (2023), followed by Kaala Paani (2023), The Trial (2023), Sapne Vs Everyone 2, and the Ananya Panday and Lakshya-starrer Chand Mera Dil.
While many actors dream of being part of a Dharma Production film, Kaimal says he tries not to attach too much emotion to any project. "When Dharma happened, I was happy, but it was the people around me who made me realise how significant it was. I feel grateful now." To prepare for his role as a Hyderabadi local in Chand Mera Dil, he immersed himself in the city's culture.
"After my audition, I didn't want anyone to question the authenticity of my performance. So I travelled to Hyderabad and spent a week there."
