After a blockbuster theatrical run, Dhurandhar: The Revenge is finally heading to OTT. While the film enjoyed humongous success, the makers were sued by Trimurti Films, owned by Rajiv Rai, for allegedly recreating Tirchi Topiwale without their permission. They sought a petition to stay its OTT release. However, the Delhi High Court has now rejected the plea and instead ordered T-Series to pay damages.

Delhi HC refuses stay on Dhurandhar 2

As per Live Law, the Delhi High Court on Thursday declined to grant interim protection to Trimurti Films in its copyright dispute with the makers of Dhurandhar 2 over the song Rang De Lal (Oye Oye) in the case titled Trimurti Films vs B62 Films. However, the court directed Super Cassettes Industries Pvt. Ltd., popularly known as T-Series, to deposit Rs 50 lakh within four weeks before the court.

The court noted that while it was not passing any immediate restraint on the film or its music, it still wanted to ensure that Trimurti Films' claims were financially secured for the time being. A detailed order is still awaited.

About the legal dispute

The lawsuit concerns the song Rang De Lal (Oye Oye) in Dhurandhar 2, which is a recreated version of Tirchi Topiwala from Tridev. The rights to the song are claimed by Trimurti Films, which alleges that the makers of Dhurandhar 2 used the track, or a substantially similar version of it, without obtaining the necessary permissions.

Trimurti Films argued that its 1988 deal with T-Series, also known as Super Cassettes, only covered limited audio exploitation rights. The company claimed the contract did not authorise the use of the song in a new feature film or its synchronisation with visual content. On these grounds, Trimurti Films requested the court to issue an interim stay on the song's usage in theatres, OTT releases, and other digital platforms. In its suit, Rajiv Rai accused the Dhurandhar team of "robbery." Even mediation between both parties failed to settle the dispute.
