Actor Richa Chadha has found herself at the centre of a social media storm after a strongly worded post about senior citizens sparked widespread criticism online. The controversy intensified after netizens angrily reacted to Chadha's remarks, prompting a larger debate on respect, ageing and public discourse.
The backlash began after Richa shared a post on X while expressing support for a young protester during demonstrations linked to education-related issues. In her post, she argued that respect should not be granted solely on the basis of age.
"Please don't respect buddhe just because they're senior citizens⦠Don't automatically respect them because of their age; they were just born before you. Let them earn it," she wrote. The post also included remarks about age-related health issues, which many social media users described as insensitive and offensive.
A user wrote, "Just like your Bollywood career no one takes seriously. You always gave anti national vibes and u did not disappoint." While another one added, "Don't know how many bathrooms she visited to check Senior Citizens trips. Probably he check for his father and sharing that experience.. Like her carrier, she is as dubm and showing her upbringing. Wish, iske bacche (agar hai to), same language me isko aur iski family ko gali de."
Among those reacting was actor Suzanne Bernert, who took exception to Richa's comments. Responding to the post, Bernert wrote, "Good that you will never age. Congratulations," a remark that quickly gained traction online and fuelled further discussion.
Many Social media users also remained divided over the issue. While some agreed with Richa's broader argument that respect should be earned through one's actions, many criticised the language she used to make her point. One user commented, "Respect should be earned. But mocking elderly people for age-related health issues says more about you than them." Others accused the actor of being disrespectful towards senior citizens and questioned the tone of her message.
Supporters, however, argued that Richa's core message was about accountability rather than age and said her remarks were being interpreted out of context. The discussion soon evolved into a wider conversation on whether age alone deserves automatic respect or whether behaviour should determine how people are treated.
Neither Richa Chadha nor Suzanne Bernert has issued any further clarification following the exchange. However, the online debate continues to gather momentum, with users expressing sharply differing views on generational respect, freedom of expression and the responsibilities of public figures while discussing sensitive social and political issues.
The episode has once again highlighted how celebrity opinions on social media can quickly become polarising, with public reactions often extending far beyond the original post and igniting broader conversations about societal values and respectful communication.
