Dharma Productions' Dostana 2 appears to have hit another roadblock. After undergoing multiple changes over the years, the much-discussed sequel has found itself in the news as director Advait Chandan has stepped away from the project due to creative differences. The development marks yet another setback for the film.
As per Variety India, filmmaker Advait Chandan, known for Secret Superstar and Laal Singh Chaddha, was supposed to direct the film and had spent about seven months developing it. However, he has now decided to step away from the project. Sources close to the development informed the portal that while there has been no major dispute, differences in creative approaches towards the project led to Advait's decision to exit the film. This new development has come as another turbulent chapter for Dostana 2.
The sequel to Dharma Productions' 2008 hit Dostana was unveiled in 2019, with Kartik Aaryan, Janhvi Kapoor, and Lakshya attached to star, while Collin D'Cunha was set to make his feature directorial debut. Production had already commenced in Goa, and portions of the film were shot. The project was later shelved after Kartik Aaryan exited the project following a rift with Karan Johar.
Dharma Productions later began work on a fresh version of the film. The project was expected to star Vikrant Massey and Lakshya, with former Miss India World Sini Shetty being considered for the female lead. The story of the second instalment of Dostana will revolve around two siblings who find themselves falling for the same man.
Earlier, Vikrant Massey expressed his excitement about joining a Dharma film. He told Times Now, "I think this news is already out. I don't know why I'm not talking about it. I'm doing Dostana 2. I'm doing my first Dharma movie." A Filmfare report had claimed that Lakshya might step away from Dharma Productions' Dostana 2. To note, he is currently shooting for Raj Mehta's Lag Jaa Gale with Tiger Shroff and Janhvi Kapoor.
The first film, Dostana, released in 2008, starred Priyanka Chopra, Abhishek Bachchan, and John Abraham, with a special appearance by Bobby Deol.
