A protest in Mumbai saw several people, including celebrities, gather in support of the Cockroach Janata Party's (CJP) demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Actor Imran Khan was among those present at August Kranti Maidan, accompanied by his cousin Zayn Marie. The actor was detained along with hundreds of protesters as police moved to disperse the gathering.
Actor Imran Khan was among more than 400 protesters detained in Mumbai during demonstrations in support of the Cockroach Janata Party's (CJP) protest at August Kranti Maidan. Mumbai police detained hundreds at protests backing the CJP's demonstration against the Chief Election Commissioner. The actor shared a selfie from police van and joked about it by writing, "Apparently I'm going for a drive."
As he shared the pic, netizens lauded his courage by calling him her. One wrote, "Herooooo." While another commented, "A real Hero let's go!" While third user wrote, "So proud of you a Real hero with guts."
As per ANI, before he was detained by Police, Actor Imran Khan says, "I don't have demands. I am here as a citizen, as someone who lives in this city. I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted - why people's voices are being suppressed. That is why I am here. I am not in a position to make demands of anyone. Nor am I part of any organization. I am just here as a representative..."
The CJP has called a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The protesters are seeking electoral reforms and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of manipulating voters' lists. To support them, protest was held at Shivaji Park in Mumbai's Dadar.Now, it has taken over August Kranti Maidan.
Apart from Imran Khan, Shabana Azmi was among few actors who urged all to join the protest. Addressing protestors, the veteran actor started her speech by identifying herself with the city, saying, "I am Mumbai chi mulagi." She described voting as a constitutional right and encouraged people to step out, question authorities and make their voices heard.
Musician Vishal Dadlani, filmmaker and composer Vishal Bhardwaj and singer Rekha Bhardwaj also marked their presence. Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah was seen at the site as well, where he met CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke.
