Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has weighed in on the controversy surrounding DMK leader and Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, who was detained by police following his alleged remarks about actor Trisha Krishnan during a public rally in Tamil Nadu.
The controversy erupted after Udhayanidhi, a former actor, gave a speech at a political gathering that drew criticism, with the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) filing complaints with the police as well as the National Commission for Women (NCW) because he made a double-meaning remark about actor Trisha. On Tuesday morning, the DMK leader was arrested by Chennai Police before later being released following directions from the Madras High Court.
Reacting to the developments, Kangana took to her Instagram Stories to express her views on the matter. She wrote, "Public display of filthy abuses, double meaning obscene and vulgar jokes is not acceptable to any civilised society. Mr Stalin was sent to jail for the offence, he might be out on bail by now but it is a good precedent."
Her reaction quickly gained traction online, with social media users debating both her remarks and the larger controversy surrounding Udhayanidhi's speech.
The row began after Udhayanidhi was addressing the Cauvery water dispute at a public event. During his speech, someone from the audience reportedly shouted Trisha Krishnan's name, following which the DMK leader made a remark that sparked outrage and led to allegations that he had made an objectionable reference to the actor.
Following the complaints, an FIR was registered against Udhayanidhi and he was arrested; he later approached the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail.
Speaking to reporters from inside the police vehicle after his detention, Udhayanidhi maintained that he had done nothing wrong. "I am ready to face the consequences, and I am not afraid of arrest," he said, adding that he had neither named anyone nor made any inappropriate remarks.
Senior DMK leader T.R. Baalu also defended him, alleging that the accusations were based on a misrepresentation of his speech. He maintained that Udhayanidhi had not referred to any individual woman and described the allegations as "cooked-up false stories."
During the hearing, the Tamil Nadu government informed the Madras High Court that Udhayanidhi had only been detained for questioning and there was no intention to keep him in custody. The court subsequently directed the police to release him the same day while asking him to cooperate with the ongoing investigation whenever required.
With Kangana's reaction now adding another layer to the political controversy, the incident continues to generate intense discussion across political and entertainment circles.
Kangana Ranaut also recently slammed Hrithik Roshan after he reacted to the viral We Need to Apologise to Hrithik trend.
