Ranveer Singh
Actor Ranveer Singh has received major legal relief after the Karnataka High Court quashed an FIR filed against him over alleged mockery of a sacred ritual depicted in the film Kantara. The case stemmed from an incident at the International Film Festival of India, where Singh mimicked a "Daiva" performance associated with the Bhoota Kola tradition, triggering backlash and accusations of hurting religious sentiments.
Following the controversy, a complaint was registered in Bengaluru, prompting the actor to seek legal intervention. In its ruling, the High Court dismissed the case, offering Singh relief but also acknowledging the sensitivities involved. As part of the resolution, the court directed the actor to issue an apology and undertake a visit to the revered Chamundeshwari Temple as a gesture of respect.
Singh had earlier clarified that his intention was not to mock but to appreciate actor Rishab Shetty's performance in Kantara. He expressed admiration for the intensity of the scene and stated that he respects all cultures and traditions. However, his imitation particularly a remark referring to the deity as a "ghost" sparked outrage among sections of the Kannadiga community, escalating the issue into a legal matter.
The controversy highlights the fine line public figures must navigate when referencing culturally sensitive material. While Singh's gesture may have been intended as praise, it was perceived differently by many, underscoring the importance of context and awareness in public discourse.
Despite the setback, the actor continues to enjoy professional success. His recent film Dhurandhar: The Revenge has performed strongly at the box office, reinforcing his position as one of Bollywood's leading stars.
The High Court's decision brings closure to the legal proceedings, balancing accountability with relief. Singh is now expected to comply with the court's directive, including the temple visit and apology, signaling a conciliatory end to the controversy that had sparked widespread debate across social and cultural circles.
With all the recent back and forth regarding the controversy, it will be interesting to see what Ranveer Singh reacts to the new hearing decision.
