Sunjay Kapur with family
As the legal battle of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur's will and assets continues, newer developments continue to emerge regularly. During the recent hearing, his mother, Rani Kapur, made some serious allegations against her daughter-in-law, Priya Kapur. She accused Priya of concealing Sunjay's salary in court while also alleging that, as per earlier claims made by Priya, Karisma Kapoor's kids did not get Rs 1,900 crore from Sunjay.
During the hearing held in the Delhi High Court on Wednesday, the lawyers representing Rani Kapur claimed that Priya had concealed the value of Sunjay's assets. Rani alleged that Sunjay's salary was Rs 60 crore per year, along with luxury assets and a 6.5 per cent stake in Sona Comstar valued at roughly Rs 650 crore. However, Priya showed only Rs 1.7 crore in bank accounts.
The lawyer reportedly said, "Massive concealment. This house (farmhouse in Delhi's Rajokri area) is built by my late husband. There are more than 50 pieces of artwork there⦠Sunjay Kapur had no life insurance, no rental income, and mutual funds? His salary was Rs 60 crore, and we are saying that he has only Rs 1.7 crore in his accounts."
Sunjay's mother went on to add that Karisma's children did not get any money from their late father. She claimed that the Rs 1,900 crore they received was shares from the RK Trust, of which Rani is the settlor.
The lawyer stated, "It is not for him (Sunjay) to bequeath (from the trust)â¦so this entire thing to say there's fairness in the will is wrongâ¦.he couldn't have under law, and he has not given itâ¦The Rs 1,900 cr worth of shares being transferred, it was not for Ms Sachdev (Priya) to give, couldn't have been, and it could not have been for Mr Sunjay to giveâ¦I, being the settler of the trust and the sole beneficiary, is (in charge of the trust's control)."
Priya's lawyer Rajiv Nayar did not hold back and slammed Rani Kapur's allegations, calling them âbaseless and reckless'. "I have filed a detailed list of assets, and every transaction is in the list of assets⦠No money has been moved abroad," he stated.
Priya's legal team also addressed Rani's allegations of Sunjay getting a salary of Rs 60 crore, adding, "Mr Kapur was a director (in AIPL0 for the year 2023-24 when he received a salary of Rs 10 crore for that financial year. For that financial year, he also received a one-time bonus of Rs 50 crore. Out of that, a TDS of Rs 23.5 crore was deducted, and he got Rs 36.5 crore in hand. Out of that, Rs 28.5 crore was spent on the purchase of immovable assets, properties in London."
They also accused Rani of withdrawing money from Sona Comstar and claimed that the latter receives Rs 21.5 lakh per month from AIPL, adding that "her personal expenses continue to be paid for exactly as they were when Sunjay was alive".
