Alia Bhatt and Sharvari's much-awaited spy thriller Alpha has finally arrived in theatres, drawing mixed reactions from audiences. While fans have praised the lead actors for their performances and action sequences, many viewers have criticised the film's screenplay and plot, with some calling it one of the weaker entries in the YRF Spy Universe. Despite the divided response, focus has now shifted to the film's OTT release.
Earlier, Variety reported that Alpha was heading directly to Netflix had surfaced months before its theatrical release. Reports claimed that streaming giant Netflix had offered Yash Raj Films (YRF) a massive Rs 215 crore deal for a direct digital premiere, bypassing cinemas altogether. However, the production house reportedly declined the offer, reiterating its commitment to a theatrical-first strategy for its biggest releases.
According to reports, YRF had dismissed the speculation that Alpha would skip theatres, stating that the rumours unfairly targeted a female-led action film. The studio maintained that films from its theatrical slate are made for the big-screen experience and that Alpha was envisioned as one of its marquee productions. The makers also expressed confidence in Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, calling them among the industry's finest talents and stressing that audiences would embrace the film just as they have previous action blockbusters from the studio.
Now that Alpha has hit theatres, social media has been flooded with mixed reviews. While viewers have appreciated Alia's commitment to the physically demanding role and praised Sharvari's confident screen presence, several users have pointed out issues with the film's pacing and storyline. Some even described the spy thriller as "OTT material," suggesting it lacked the scale and emotional depth expected from a YRF Spy Universe film.
Despite the criticism, Hrithik Roshan's cameo has emerged as one of the film's biggest highlights. Fans have hailed his appearance as a major crowd-pleasing moment, with many saying it injects fresh excitement into the franchise. Bobby Deol's portrayal of the antagonist has also earned praise, while the film's slick visuals and high-octane action sequences have been widely appreciated.
As for its digital premiere, YRF has not officially announced Alpha's Netflix release date. Going by the studio's usual release pattern, the film is expected to arrive on the streaming platform after completing its theatrical run. Until then, audiences can catch the female-led spy thriller exclusively in cinemas.
