Singer Daler Mehndi's son, Gurdeep Mehndi, has addressed the controversy involving Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal, who reprimanded the singer on stage during a live cultural event. In his first official statement on the controversy, Gurdeep described the incident as "very hurtful and unfortunate" for the family, clarifying that his earlier remarks were not intended to downplay the incident.
Gurdeep took to his social media, explaining how he learnt about the incident. He was abroad when the controversy happened, but returned to India to meet his family and find out what had occurred.
Recalling their chat, Gurdeep said he asked Daler, "Papa ji kya hua?" (Dad, what happened). The singer, known for his jolly Punjabi nature, replied, "First class, main thik hoon," (Everything is fine, I am okay).
Gurdeep said that his father often relies on humour and positivity when dealing with difficult situations. He explained this was why Daler appeared casual while speaking about the incident at an event. Gurdeep, however, clarified that his own remarks had been interpreted differently from what he meant. "Obviously we are stressed and us family together are dealing with it," he said.
While concluding the video, Gurdeep expressed gratitude to everyone who had supported his father and the family during this tough time. He also thanked members of the film fraternity, particularly his uncle, singer Mika Singh, for defending his father since the controversy. "Baki bhot bhot thankyou aaplogon ka, aaplogon ne bhot support kiya, to the film industry including my chacha ji Mika ji," (Thank you, everyone, for your support, including the film industry and my uncle Mika ji) he said.
The incident happened when Daler Mehndi was performing at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in Uttarakhand. During the live event, Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal interrupted the singer and questioned his ability to perform, suggesting that he was under the influence of alcohol.
