Curry Barker's Obsession has gone from being a low-budget horror experiment to one of the biggest box-office success stories in recent memory. Made for less than 1 million USD, the found-footage horror film has shattered records, defied industry expectations and emerged as the highest-grossing film acquisition in history.
Now, after a month of dominating the box office, fans finally have an update on when they can watch the film at home.
According to reports, Obsession will be available for digital purchase and rental from June 30. While an official streaming date has not yet been announced, the film is widely expected to arrive on Peacock at a later stage.
The digital release comes after Focus Features delayed its original plans due to the film's unprecedented theatrical performance. Obsession was initially scheduled to arrive on digital platforms on June 2, but the studio decided to keep it exclusively in cinemas after ticket sales continued to grow week after week.
The horror thriller has become a rare box-office phenomenon. Starring Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston, the film posted multiple consecutive weekend increases and became the first movie since E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982 to see its earnings rise during both its second and third weekends in theatres.
Interestingly, Obsession has found a massive audience in India as well. What began as a niche horror release turned into a word-of-mouth phenomenon, with the film crossing Rs 75 crore and emerging as the biggest Hollywood hit of 2026 in the country.
Obsession has also rewritten the record books in other ways. The film reportedly surpassed The Blair Witch Project to become the highest-grossing movie ever acquired from a film festival. It also overtook the global earnings of Get Out, Jordan Peele's Oscar-winning horror hit.
The film's remarkable success prompted Focus Features to abandon its original digital rollout strategy. Under a post-pandemic agreement, Universal Pictures had the option to move lower-grossing films to digital platforms after just 17 days in theatres. Since Obsession opened with 17 million USD, many expected it to follow that model.
Instead, the movie continued attracting audiences, forcing the studio to rethink its plans. On the very day it had originally been expected to arrive on streaming, Obsession reportedly earned another 5.7 million USD at the box office.
Directed by Curry Barker, the film follows characters Bear and Nikki, played by Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette, respectively. Its combination of found-footage horror, word-of-mouth buzz and strong audience reactions has turned it into one of the year's most unexpected success stories.
For now, viewers can still catch Obsession in theatres before its digital release on June 30.
