Ahead of the India release of One Night Only, director Will Gluck and producer Jacqueline Monetta have opened up about why Callum Turner was always their first choice to play Owen in the romantic comedy. Despite some mixed reactions to Turner's casting after the trailer dropped, the filmmakers say they never questioned their decision, insisting he brought exactly what the character needed.

Why Callum Turner was perfect for One Night Only

Speaking to India Today, ahead of the film's August 21 release, Gluck said Owen was a character audiences had to instantly connect with, making the casting process crucial.

"Callum is funny, goofy, winning and sweet, all in a body carved out of stone," the filmmaker said, praising the actor's effortless blend of humour and charisma.

The role marks another romantic lead for Turner, who was most recently seen in Eternity alongside Elizabeth Olsen and Miles Teller. With One Night Only, the actor takes on a character navigating one of the most vulnerable nights of his life, balancing comedy with emotional depth.

While a section of viewers questioned whether Turner was the right fit after the trailer's release, producer Jacqueline Monetta said the team always believed he was perfect for Owen's emotional journey.

"You need someone the audience believes would fight for love," Monetta explained. "With Callum, you believe it completely. He brings charm and vulnerability at the same time, which is what makes Owen so easy to root for."

Makers defend Callum Turner's casting

Monetta added that the audience first meets Owen during one of the lowest points in his life, but Turner's performance ensures viewers empathise with him rather than pity him.

"We meet him at one of the worst moments of his life, and somehow, instead of feeling defeated by him, you want to watch him get back up," she said.

Directed by Will Gluck, One Night Only stars Monica Barbaro opposite Turner. The film follows two strangers whose lives intersect on the one night of the year when single people are legally allowed to have sex, setting the stage for an unconventional romantic comedy.

Barbaro was last seen in the crime thriller Crime 101, alongside Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry, while Turner recently appeared in Eternity. With Gluck promising humour, romance and emotional honesty, One Night Only is set to arrive in Indian cinemas on August 21, 2026.

This is Callum Turner's first project releasing post his wedding to Dua Lipa, who also accompanied the actor to the New York premiere of the film.
