Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility is getting a fresh screen adaptation that connects the author's timeless observations on love and relationships with the realities of modern dating. The film explores how behaviours such as love bombing and ghosting have remained familiar despite changes in dating culture and the language used to describe them.
Directed by Georgia Oakley, the film features Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esme Creed-Miles, Caitriona Balfe, Frank Dillane, Herbert Nordrum, George MacKay and Fiona Shaw. The screenplay has been adapted by Diana Reid, with Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, India Flint and Jo Wallett serving as producers.
Reid said revisiting Austen's novel for the screen surprised her with how contemporary its characters and narrative felt. Although the author did not use today's dating terminology, the emotional patterns at the heart of the story remain recognisable. "Just because the labels have changed doesn't mean that people have," Reid said, drawing a connection between the novel's romantic disappointments and the relationship experiences people discuss on social media today.
She added that some of the heartbreak in the book felt like the kind of experience someone might complain about on TikTok. Austen's humour, Reid noted, often comes from the frustrations people cause each other, making the romantic moments that follow feel all the more meaningful. At its core, the story examines the search for someone who shares one's worldview, even when finding such a connection seems difficult.
The film follows sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood as they navigate love, loss and societal expectations after their father's death changes their family circumstances.
While the more reserved Elinor develops feelings for Edward Ferrars, Marianne's romantic life takes an unexpected turn when she encounters the charming John Willoughby. Their differing approaches to love often put the sisters at odds, with Elinor favouring reason and Marianne following her emotions.
However, their close bond helps them navigate changing circumstances, romantic disappointments and the uncertainty of starting afresh.
With its mix of wit, romance and emotional conflict, Sense and Sensibility brings Austen's exploration of human relationships to contemporary audiences. The adaptation aims to show that while dating culture and its terminology may evolve, the desire for genuine connection, understanding and lasting love remains unchanged. The film is scheduled to release in Indian cinemas on October 30, 2026.
