The battle is officially back on. Paramount Pictures and Legendary Entertainment have dropped the trailer of Street Fighter, giving fans a glimpse of the big-screen adaptation of the popular video game franchise. Led by Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji as Ken Masters and Ryu, respectively, the film promises plenty of punches, rivalries and larger-than-life action when it arrives in Indian cinemas on October 16.
The trailer launch itself got a suitably grand treatment, kicking off the film's World Warrior Tour at Tokyo's Shinjuku Yunika Vision screens. Noah Centineo, Koji, Callina Liang and Jason Momoa were among the stars present at the launch, alongside Japanese cast member Hirooki Goto, director Kitao Sakurai and Street Fighter game director Takayuki Nakayama.
Set in 1993, the film follows estranged fighters Ryu and Ken, whose paths cross again after Chun-Li, played by Liang, recruits them for the upcoming World Warrior Tournament. What begins as a high-stakes battle quickly takes a darker turn as a mysterious conspiracy comes into play.
The trailer teases the complicated history between the two fighters, with their reunion eventually putting them on opposing sides. So, while the tournament promises the expected combat spectacle, the story also appears to be digging into the demons and baggage that have followed Ryu and Ken.
Sakurai, who directs the film, brings a colourful collection of familiar characters from the game into the live-action world. The ensemble includes Jason Momoa as Blanka, Joe "Roman Reigns" Anoa'i as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson as Balrog and Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim.
The makers have also given fans an unusual way to experience the trailer. Alongside its global launch, Street Fighter has introduced what is being billed as the first full-length playable movie trailer on YouTube. Through the STREET FIGHTER Combo Challenge, viewers can interact with the trailer while watching it, turning the promotional experience into a mini-game.
With Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Blanka, Dhalsim and several other fan-favourite fighters entering the fray, the upcoming adaptation is clearly looking to bring the arcade experience to the big screen, with a few Hollywood-sized punches thrown in.
The film's World Warrior Tour is now set to travel beyond Japan as the makers build anticipation for its theatrical release. Indian audiences will be able to catch Street Fighter in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu from October 16.
