BTS leader RM is facing fresh scrutiny after The Pixel Project, an organisation focused on ending violence against women, indefinitely suspended him from its list of male role models. The decision came after RM and fellow BTS member J-Hope attended a Chris Brown and Usher concert in Toronto on August 12, 2026.

RM and J-Hope mired in Chris Brown controversy

The two BTS stars were seen at the concert and later met Usher backstage. Photos from the event also showed them with Chris Brown, triggering criticism from sections of the BTS fandom. The backlash largely centred on Brown's controversial history and allegations and convictions involving violence against women. Fans questioned the decision of RM, who had previously been recognised by The Pixel Project for his efforts to promote gender equality and challenge problematic attitudes.

RM, whose real name is Kim Nam-joon, was included in The Pixel Project's list of 16 male role models in 2024. The organisation had highlighted his willingness to learn about feminism and gender-related issues, particularly after past discussions around sexism and misogyny in some BTS lyrics.

RM dropped out of male role models list

However, following the concert controversy, The Pixel Project announced that it had indefinitely suspended RM from its male role models list. The organisation's decision has sparked another debate among fans about celebrity accountability and whether publicly attending an artist's concert can be interpreted as an endorsement of that person.

The controversy has divided the BTS fandom. While some fans have criticised RM and J-Hope for attending the concert, others have argued that watching an artist perform does not necessarily mean endorsing everything associated with them. The debate has also raised questions about the expectations placed on global celebrities who are presented as role models.

Importantly, RM has not been accused of committing any of the offences associated with Chris Brown. The criticism directed at him concerns his public association with Brown and whether that association is consistent with the values attached to his position on The Pixel Project's list.

All about the controversy

The controversy also comes at a significant time for BTS. After completing their mandatory military service, all seven members returned to group activities and reunited for their highly anticipated 2026 comeback. With their global profile continuing to grow, individual actions by members often attract considerable attention from fans and critics worldwide.

As of now, RM has not publicly addressed The Pixel Project's decision or explained his attendance at the concert. His agency has also not issued a public response to the suspension. Meanwhile, discussions continue online, with fans debating whether the incident should affect RM's reputation as a public figure and former role model.

The situation highlights the increasingly complicated relationship between celebrities, personal choices and public expectations, particularly for artists whose influence extends well beyond their music.
