The Korean drama Perfect Crown has found itself at the center of a major controversy after viewers accused the series of distorting Korean history and undermining the country's sovereignty. The backlash intensified following the release of Episode 11, prompting lead stars IU and Byeon Woo Seok to publicly apologise to fans amid mounting criticism online.
Set in an alternate modern-day Korea functioning as a constitutional monarchy, Perfect Crown follows the story of chaebol heiress Seong Hui Ju, played by IU, and Grand Prince Ian, portrayed by Byeon Woo Seok. While the romantic drama initially attracted attention for its lavish production and star-studded cast, it soon became embroiled in debates over its portrayal of Korean historical identity.
The controversy reportedly began after viewers criticised scenes from a coronation sequence in which royal officials shouted "Cheonse" instead of "Manse." Many Korean audiences argued that the term historically symbolised a vassal relationship to China rather than Korea's independence and sovereignty. Social media platforms quickly became flooded with criticism, with several viewers accusing the drama of presenting historically insensitive narratives.
As backlash intensified, IU addressed the issue during a fan gathering, where she appeared emotional and reportedly fought back tears while apologising. According to fan accounts and online posts, the singer-actress admitted she needed to be "more responsible" and acknowledged disappointing viewers.
Byeon Woo Seok also issued a formal apology, stating that he failed to consider the historical sensitivity deeply enough before participating in the project. The actor expressed regret over the controversy and thanked fans for voicing their concerns.
The debate has since sparked wider conversations about the responsibility of historical representation in Korean entertainment, especially in fictional dramas inspired by real cultural and political contexts.
