Sony LIV is set to kick off its month-long Malayalam Movie Fest with the digital premiere of Karakkam. Billed as Malayalam cinema's first musical horror-comedy, the film blends spooky moments with humour, music and nostalgia, making it the opening title in the platform's July slate of Malayalam releases.
Following its theatrical run, Karakkam received appreciation for its quirky concept, colourful visuals and family-friendly storytelling. Now, the film is gearing up to entertain a wider audience with its OTT debut.
Karakkam begins streaming exclusively on Sony LIV from July 3 as the first premiere of the platform's Malayalam Movie Fest.
Directed by Subhash Lalitha Subrahmanian, the film follows two carefree youngsters, Dhanush and Khaja, whose drunken New Year's Eve prank accidentally unleashes five eccentric spirits into the living world. What starts as harmless fun quickly turns into chaos as the ghosts begin haunting the duo, leading to a series of hilarious and unexpected situations.
As the mystery unfolds, the friends realise each spirit has unfinished business from the past. Their mission to help the ghosts find closure results in comic misadventures, emotional moments and lively musical sequences, giving the film a unique flavour.
Speaking about the film's digital release, director Subhash Lalitha Subrahmanian said the team wanted to offer audiences something different by combining horror, comedy and music into a wholesome family entertainer with a retro touch.
He added that the positive response during the theatrical release was encouraging and expressed happiness that Sony LIV would now bring the film to a much wider audience. The filmmaker also hoped viewers would enjoy its humour, music and heart as much as the team enjoyed creating it.
Produced by Ankush Singh and Kimberly Trinidade under Krownstars Entertainment and Black Turtle Productions, Karakkam stars Sreenath Bhasi, Femina George, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Sidharth Bharathan, Shaun Romy, Bijukuttan, Manikandan R. Achari and Midhutty in key roles. The music has been composed by Sam C. S.
With Karakkam launching the Malayalam Movie Fest on July 3, Sony LIV is expected to roll out several more Malayalam film premieres throughout the month, celebrating diverse storytelling and regional cinema.
