Annimated film Mahaprabhu Jagannath banned a day before release; makers issue statement

The makers of Mahaprabhu Jagannath have approached the Supreme Court after the Orissa High Court refused to lift the stay on the film's release. The producers are seeking urgent relief, arguing that the continued ban has caused significant financial losses and delayed the release of the much-awaited mythological drama.

The controversy began after objections were raised over the film's portrayal of Lord Jagannath and certain religious themes. Petitioners alleged that some scenes could hurt the sentiments of devotees and sought a stay on the release. Acting on the plea, the Orissa High Court directed that the film should not be released until the matter was heard further.

Makers move to SC

Challenging the High Court's decision, the filmmakers have now moved the Supreme Court, requesting it to set aside the interim stay and allow the film to hit theatres. They have maintained that Mahaprabhu Jagannath has been made with utmost respect for religious beliefs and does not intend to offend any community. According to the producers, the film is based on historical and devotional narratives and has undergone the required certification process before its planned release.

The Supreme Court is expected to hear the matter soon. The verdict will determine whether the stay on the film continues or if the makers receive permission to release it in cinemas.

Makers issue statement

The makers have now released a statement over the stay orders, it read, "Mahaprabhu Jagannath is an extension of our animated series Jay Jagannath, created with the utmost honesty, sincerity and devotion for Lord Jagannath and His devotees. The film is a heartfelt depiction of a devotee's bhav (devotion) towards Mahaprabhu Jagannath, and we make no claim otherwise. We deeply respect the sentiments of every devotee and everyone who follows the path of Lord Jagannath. We simply hope audiences get the opportunity to watch the film and decide for themselves. This Rath Yatra, our wish is for the film to reach children and families and bring them closer to learning more about Lord Jagannath and imbibe the culture and values. We have made this film giving our heart, soul and with pure intentions to celebrate the faith, culture and devotion. The film has received U certification from the CBFC in Hindi, Odia and Telugu and we have filed a review petition before the Hon'ble Supreme Court. As the matter is currently sub judice, we will refrain from commenting further and place our faith in the judicial process. Pranam to Prabhu Jagannath"
