Tamil superstar Suriya has revealed the enormous financial challenges he faced while ensuring the release of his blockbuster film Karuppu. Speaking after the film's massive box office success, the actor admitted that he had to take loans to keep the project afloat, describing the period as one of the most stressful phases of his career. Despite the hardships, Suriya said he never lost faith in the film and believed it deserved to reach audiences.
Reflecting on the difficult journey, Suriya said, "It was a financial burden on me. I had to take loans to make sure the film released." His candid confession offered fans a glimpse into the struggles behind the scenes, especially after Karuppu initially faced release delays due to financial settlements involving the production house.
The actor recalled that several crucial creative decisions were taken despite the financial crunch. One such decision was shooting the film's climactic song months after the final edit had already been locked.
Explaining the reasoning behind it, Suriya said, "We shot that climax song five months after locking the edit. Even after filming was completed, one of the assistants suggested adding a song dedicated to Karuppasamy despite the financial hurdles." Although the team was already under severe monetary pressure, they felt the sequence would enhance the emotional impact of the film and chose to go ahead with it.
Jyotika also added, "This was completely his work. But we do everything together, even when we are parenting we are always on the same side of the page we never really discuss⦠here it was completely his generosity and him wanting to make the film work its way out. It was a big film."
Suriya acknowledged the commitment shown by everyone associated with the project, saying the crew refused to compromise on the film's vision despite the mounting challenges. According to the actor, the determination of the makers ensured that Karuppu eventually reached theatres in the form they had always imagined.
The film's release itself was far from smooth. Originally scheduled to hit cinemas a day earlier, Karuppu witnessed last-minute cancellations of shows across Tamil Nadu due to unresolved financial issues. The uncertainty left fans disappointed, but the hurdles were eventually cleared, allowing the film to release successfully the following day.
The gamble ultimately paid off. Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji and starring Suriya alongside Trisha Krishnan, emerged as one of the biggest Tamil blockbusters of the year, crossing the Rs 200 crore mark worldwide. The film also became the highest-grossing release of Suriya's career, winning praise from audiences and critics alike.
Expressing his gratitude, Suriya said the overwhelming response made every struggle worthwhile. "Housefull board pictures make me very happy," he shared, adding that seeing families, children and longtime fans celebrate the film's success was the biggest reward after months of uncertainty and sacrifice. For the actor, Karuppu stands as a reminder that perseverance, belief and teamwork can overcome even the toughest financial obstacles.
