Mary Kom got emotional while opening up about her home state Manipur during a conversation with Kanika Mann on Bigg Boss 20. The Olympic medallist spoke about the ongoing situation in the state and admitted that she feels helpless and ashamed about not being able to do more for its people.
During the conversation, Mary reflected on her achievements as a sportsperson and her contribution to the country. However, she said that despite everything she has accomplished on the international stage, she has not been able to make the difference she wanted to in Manipur.
"I could not do anything for the protection and safety of my Manipur," Mary told Kanika. She further spoke about her hope that people belonging to different communities in the state can come together and live peacefully.
"There are multiple tribes in Manipur, there should be unity among all. All should live peacefully with love," she said.
Mary went on to describe herself as helpless, explaining that she does not consider herself powerful enough to bring about the change she wishes to see. "What can I do? I am helpless. I am not a powerful person. I have achieved a lot for our country but I could not do anything for my state," she said.
The boxer also admitted that the situation has left her feeling embarrassed and ashamed. "I feel very embarrassed. I feel very ashamed," she said, expressing her anguish over the violence and suffering in Manipur.
Mary added, "Manipur mein itna kuch ho gaya, main kuch nahi kar paayi. Dukh hota hai" (So much has happened in Manipur, and I couldn't do anything. It is painful). Her comments reflected the emotional burden she carries over the situation in her home state.
Mary's entry into Bigg Boss 20 has already attracted considerable attention, with the boxing champion bringing her sporting legacy and personal journey to the reality show. The season premiered on September 6 and is hosted by Salman Khan.
The premiere also featured a special message from Priyanka Chopra, who played Mary in the 2014 biographical film Mary Kom. Priyanka wished the boxer luck for her stint on the show and encouraged her to remain true to herself.
"Mary, just be yourself. Play with an open heart. I'm so looking forward to your journey. Lots and lots of love," Priyanka said in her video message. She also jokingly warned the other contestants about Mary's powerful knockout punches.
Meanwhile, Mary's candid conversation with Kanika offered viewers a glimpse into a deeply personal side of the celebrated boxer, beyond her achievements in the ring. Her remarks about Manipur highlighted her emotional connection with her homeland and her desire to see peace and unity prevail in the state.
