Doraemon director passes away at 84
Veteran Japanese filmmaker and animation director Tsutomu Shibayama, best known for his long-standing association with the beloved anime franchise Doraemon, has died at the age of 84 after battling lung cancer. The news of his passing was confirmed by the renowned Japanese animation studio Asia-do, formally known as Ajia-do Animation Works, where Shibayama had previously served in top leadership roles.
In an official obituary released by the studio, the company stated that its former President and CEO passed away on March 6, 2026. The statement noted that Shibayama succumbed to lung cancer and remembered him as a guiding force in the studio's creative journey.
Shibayama earned widespread recognition for his extensive work on the Doraemon television anime series and its feature films. Over a career spanning decades, he helmed the Doraemon movie franchise for more than 20 years, playing a pivotal role in shaping one of Japan's most cherished animated properties and introducing it to generations of viewers worldwide.
Before becoming synonymous with Doraemon, Shibayama built a strong foundation in animation direction. He worked on several notable projects, including the popular series Dokonjo Gaeru and Ganso Tensai Bakabon, contributing significantly to their visual storytelling and animation quality.
The studio's tribute further highlighted his leadership as chief director of the Doraemon television series. Beyond that, he also served as director and general director on numerous well-known titles such as Nintama Rantaro, Chibi Maruko-chan, and Majime ni Fumajime Kaiketsu Zorori, reflecting the breadth of his influence across Japanese animation.
According to the studio, Shibayama's funeral ceremony was conducted privately, attended only by close family members, in keeping with the wishes of his loved ones. The company requested privacy and stated that it would not be accepting condolence visits, floral tributes, or monetary offerings.
Expressing gratitude on his behalf, the studio thanked fans and well-wishers for the affection and encouragement they extended to Shibayama throughout his life and career. The team also shared plans to organise a memorial service at a later date to honour his legacy.
Among his many contributions, Doraemon remains Shibayama's most iconic work. The story follows a robotic cat from the 22nd century who travels back in time to help a kind-hearted but accident-prone boy, Nobita Nobi, make better choices and build a brighter future.
