Television actor Rohit Chandel, popularly known for his role in TV series Pandya Store has reportedly been arrested by Mumbai Police for allegedly stalking, repeatedly calling, harassing and assaulting a 16-year-old girl. The incident occurred in an eastern suburb of the city. Following the incident, a case has been registered against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Along with the POCSO Act, the Pant Nagar Police have also reportedly filed a report invoking Sections 78 and 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which relate to stalking and causing hurt. According to a report by The Times of India, the TV actor was arrested at his Dahisar residence on Friday. He was later produced before a special POCSO court, which has remanded him to police custody.
As per the complaint filed against Rohit by a resident of an eastern suburb, the actor reportedly made repeated calls to the minor from his own personal number as well as several other phone numbers. This led to her harassment.
The complaint further added that on July 5, Chandel even allegedly confronted the girl around her residential building and chased her. He then picked an argument, abused her and even assaulted her by hitting her with his hands.
Police shared that the accused, Rohit, and the minor were known to each other. Speaking about the case, a police official reportedly said, "Following the complaint, a case was registered, and the accused has been placed under arrest. Further probe is underway in the case." The investigation in the matter is currently ongoing. Meanwhile, the actor or his representatives have not reacted to it yet.
Rohit Chandel is a 29-year-old actor born in Maharashtra. Chandel made his acting debut in a commercial advertisement after facing rejection in over 90 auditions. In 2014, Chandel made his television debut with the BIG Magic series Har Mushkil Ka Hal Akbar Birbal in a minor role. Later, he made appearances in various Hindi series in several significant roles.
He rose to fame for playing Baji Rao in the TV serial Kashibai Bajirao Ballal. He is also known for his role as Dhawal Makwana in Pandya Store. He was currently seen on the TV show Sairaab.
