The chilling murder of a 22-year-old commuter aboard a Mumbai local train has shocked the city. Television actress Rashami Desai recently expressed shock and anger over the matter. The actress also questioned public safety and the growing violence in the country, adding that she does not feel safe at all.
Taking to her Instagram stories, Rashami reacted to reports of the incident, in which a young man was reportedly stabbed to death by a fellow passenger. The two allegedly got into an argument over closing the train door during heavy rainfall.
Rashami shared a post of the news report and shared her thoughts. She wrote, "He said he is mentally unstable and we cannot do anything about it. Anybody can kill someone and say that mentally unstable and get away with it is what are security and the safety and the life we have in our country. Life has no value."
In the post, Rashami even voiced her frustration over the current situation and said she no longer feels safe. "I don't feel safe at all. It is a very big statement, but what are we going into? This is not what we want. This is not new India," she added.
According to police, 22-year-old identified as Mayank Ramesh Lohar, a resident of Virar who worked as a salesman at a private firm in Andheri, was travelling home on the Churchgate-Nalasopara Fast Local on the night of June 23, 2026. Investigators stated that the incident began after a disagreement inside the first-class compartment over whether the train door should remain open during heavy rain.
Mayank reportedly asked another passenger to close the door since the rainwater was entering the coach. The argument soon escalated, and the accused, identified as Roshan Suvarna. He reportedly stabbed him in the abdomen with a sharp weapon while the train was between Andheri and Borivali stations.
Police revealed that the suspect fled by jumping off the moving train before it reached Platform No 6 at Borivali station. Meanwhile, Mayank was rushed for medical treatment, where he first received initial care before being shifted to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali under the escort of Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel. Despite doctors' efforts, the 22-year-old later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigators reviewed footage from more than 400 CCTV cameras across Borivali, Andheri, Mira Road and Nalasopara railway stations to identify the accused. Based on CCTV footage, technical surveillance and intelligence inputs, police have identified the suspect as 30-year-old Roshan Suvarna, a resident of Mira Road East who worked at a cargo company. Suvarna was later traced in the Panvel area of Navi Mumbai and arrested on June 24.
