Actor Rohit Chandel continues to remain in judicial custody in connection with a case registered against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. However, amid reports claiming that his bail plea had been rejected, a close relative of the Sairaab actor has clarified that the information is incorrect.

Bail plea not rejected, hearing postponed

Speaking to mid-day, the relative stated that Rohit's bail application has not been dismissed by the court but has merely been postponed due to procedural reasons.

"Rohit's bail plea has been postponed. The representatives from Ghatkopar Police Station weren't present for the July 17 hearing, so now our next hearing is on July 21. The plea was not rejected but postponed. The news about the bail plea getting rejected is completely false," the relative said.

Earlier reports had claimed that the POCSO Court had denied Rohit's bail following a hearing on July 17. The clarification now suggests that no final decision has yet been taken on the actor's bail application.

All about the POCSO case

Rohit was arrested by the Pant Nagar Police from his Dahisar residence on July 10 after a minor girl accused him of stalking, repeatedly calling her, harassing and physically assaulting her. He was subsequently produced before a special POCSO court, which remanded him to police custody before he was later sent to judicial custody.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complainant alleged that the actor continued contacting her through his personal mobile number as well as other phone numbers despite being repeatedly asked to stop. The complaint further states that on July 5, Rohit allegedly intercepted the 16-year-old near her residential society, followed her, got into a verbal altercation, abused her and physically assaulted her.

Based on the allegations, the actor has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with Sections 78 (stalking) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

A police official had earlier confirmed the arrest, saying, "Following the complaint, a case was registered and the accused has been placed under arrest. Further probe is underway in the case."

With the bail hearing now rescheduled for July 21, Rohit will continue to remain in judicial custody until the court hears his application. The investigation into the allegations is currently underway, and the court is yet to rule on his request for bail.
