Television actor and BJP member Rupali Ganguly has found herself at the centre of a social media storm after reacting to a viral video allegedly showing a minor using abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Her response, which included the remark, "I really wish he was a dictator," has triggered sharp criticism online, with users questioning her choice of words.
The controversy began after a video, widely circulated on social media, purportedly showed a young girl using abusive language against the Prime Minister and hitting his photograph. A user sharing the clip called for action against the child's parents and raised concerns about the influence of social media on children.
Reacting to the post, the Anupamaa actor wrote on X, "Insulting the PM like this must have repercussions!!! I really wish he was a dictator!!!"
While some users agreed that abusive language directed at the country's Prime Minister was unacceptable, many took issue with the Anupama actor's reference to dictatorship, saying the comment was excessive and inappropriate.
Soon after her post went viral, social media users flooded the comments section with mixed reactions, with many taking issue with her choice of words.
One user wrote, "Mussolini... Do you know Benito Mussolini? Do you know what was done to him by the people of Italy?"
Another mocked the actor by posting a picture of the North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un and saying, "Let's give thanks to our Supreme leader."
A third questioned her priorities, writing, "People are reacting to a 15-year-old abusing someone, but there is no message of sympathy for a 15-year-old girl who was raped and murdered."
Another user commented, "Focus on your f''''s show lady because your political takes are worse."
The controversy comes amid an ongoing debate surrounding political slogans used during recent student protests. A separate incident involving a 15-year-old girl accused of raising abusive slogans against PM Modi also drew attention after she later issued an apology, claiming she had been influenced by those around her.
Rupali Ganguly's post has now become a fresh flashpoint online, with users divided over whether her demand for "repercussions" was justified or whether her "dictator" remark crossed a line.
